When using the desktop application of 1Password, on top of being able to easily manage and edit your items from the application instead of needing to use 1Password.com, you also have the ability to keep 1Password in your browser unlocked for however long the 1Password desktop application is unlocked. Additionally, because the 1Password desktop application is handling the unlocking, Windows Hello can be used to unlock 1Password for Windows and by extension, unlock 1Password in your browser as well. You're also able to manage large amounts of items in the desktop app (for example, copying a bunch of items from one vault to another). More on reddit.com

With the 1Password 7 update, our Windows app is seriously fun and useful. Unlock with Windows Hello, manage multiple accounts, check your logins with Watchtower, and all the fixins. However, if you're set with logging in through 1Password.com, that's totally fine and there's no need to get the app!

On Windows, there's no integration yet between 1Password X and 1Password desktop app. So, no, they don't communicate with each other. Mac has, but with the beta versions.
On the other hand, 1Password X will work without the desktop app.
If you want integration between the extension and desktop app, stay with the regular 1Password extension.

You don't "need" to have it, no. I like it since it works well with the extension. This way I can have the 1password app open, open chrome, and it is ready to go. I say give it a try and see -- worst case you just go back to using the extension only :).

Additionally, because the 1Password desktop application is handling the unlocking, Windows Hello can be used to unlock 1Password for Windows and by extension, unlock 1Password in your browser as well. You're also able to manage large amounts of items in the desktop app (for example, copying a bunch of items from one vault to another).

Definitely install the 1Password desktop app. It really enhances the experience! As others have said, just try it and you will see the benefits. If you really do not, then you can uninstall it. I would agree with anyone who says, "Why can't this just all be in the extension?". However, I also find the 1Password Desktop App + Chrome Extension experience far better than the Lastpass experience was, so I accept that some things are just smoother in a Desktop App.
