Hello,
Just ordered 'MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI' and a ryzen 9 9950x3d.
The question is fairly straightforward: Are they compatible or do I need to update the bios?
If I do need to update bios, how would I go about it? Don't I need a cpu in order for it to update? Or does it work even without updating it, but just less efficient? I have never updated a bios so I have no idea what to do...

I would flash latest bios before I connect cpu or memory. Just all mobo power cables and follow the official instructions.

I saw that someone wrote to first update the bios before installing windows. They went onto explain, if you don't update the bios windows will start parking cores onto the "weaker" of the two ccds.
I have a msi x870e mag tomahawk mobo and I will finish putting thr build together in a day or so. It's newer so I would assume I wouldn't have to update the bios. The guy posted his review only a few weeks ago.

I always think it’s a very good idea to update to the latest bios when you first build a pc. BIOS updates fix bugs through CPU microcode updates (for your cpu it would be called AGESA) Fixes bugs/compatability with windows. Updates security And can give better performance (usually a small % but hey its free) If you have any issues after a bios updates you can always flash back to an earlier BIOS. While you don’t need to update the BIOS often, I highly suggest getting the latest when you build, and only update if there is a big feature or bug that needs fixing. For AMD, BIOS updates and chipset drivers go hand in hand so if you update your chipset drivers definitely update your BIOS if there is a newer AGESA microcode.
