Does the Greek Word Aion Mean Eternity? | Tommy Redmon
There are strong arguments on both sides of the debate for the meaning of aion. On the one hand, Universalists point out that the word aion has a complicated history in the Greek language, and should often mean something more like the English “aeon” or “eon” which implies a limited amount of time (and which has the same meaning as the Latin saecularis but etymologically comes from aevum-which came from aion- which later became ae(vum)ternitas, or eternity).

Aion | odip
Aion (αἰών) is commonly associated in early Greek literature with ‘life’, while aidios (ἀίδιος) is usually related to ‘everlastingness’. Other terms such as aenaos (ἀέναος- ever-flowing) and aeizoos (ἀείζωος - ever-living) underline the early Greek concept of eternity and the long duration of lifetime in regards to the cosmos, spirits, or gods.

Aion | Oxford Classical Dictionary
March 7, 2016 - In early Greek αἰών means ‘life’ (often in the sense of ‘vital force’), ‘whole lifetime’, ‘generation’. It was perhaps through application to the kosmos, the lifetime of which is never-ending, that the word acquired the sense of eternity (cf. Pl. Ti. 37d; Arist. Cael. 279a23–8). There is no good evidence for cult of Aion in the Classical or Hellenistic periods.

Edward Beecher(11) remarks, “It commonly means merely continuity of action . . . all attempts to set forth eternity as the original and primary sense of aión are at war with the facts of the Greek language for five centuries, in which it denoted life and its derivative senses, and the sense eternity was unknown.” And he also says what is the undoubted fact, “that the original sense ofaión is not eternity.
