I slept on futons in Japan and then America for about 3 years. What makes a futon work is the floor it sits on. In Japan it's springy tatami mats. When I had a vaulted wood floor under mine in America, it was great. When I had it on carpet over concrete, it was unusable. You will also need to air out the futon not infrequently, which could be an issue depending on your space. Just fyi. I would not go back to a futon. But I am going to get a thick American style futon mattress to have in the nursery for when my toddler wants to snuggle to sleep, once I move my gel mattress off the floor of the nursery and back to my own room.
