You will have to add a credit card, it is like you said just for back up. After the order has began the shipping process you are welcome to remove the credit card from your account. I submitted a return, but somehow selected "amazon account balance" to return the funds to Instead of the desired original credit card the payment was made on...
Is it possible via the web interface to correct the returns desired path of refund if the pickup was just made, but amazon has not received it?

you cant update it anymore. wait for the refund to be posted to your gift card balance then call CS so that they can reprocess it back to your original form of payment
