There's many ways to look at a motherboard. YouTubers who have overclocking competitions typically only look at the voltage regulators. The AM4 socket itself on all motherboards is designed to deliver 142 watts, and this limit seriously limits the overclocking ability of the 5900x and 5950x. This was why AM5 moved from PGA to LGA to add more pins to up it to 230 watts. All B550 motherboards support PCIe 4.0 and resizable-BAR which is all you need for the best performance with a 3070 Ti. If we compare the MSI B550 Gaming Plus to a $80 motherboard, it has 4 features: ARGB Better VRMs ATX form factor: Adds Dual M.2 + 1 PCIe X1 USB C Front Panel If you wanted something like a higher quality motherboard (6 PCB layers/50% more copper) with WIFi, a better Ethernet LAN, better Audio, USB 4/Thunderbolt, then it would be worth considering an upgrade. In my opinion the very best motherboard is the ASUS B550-XE STRIX which I personally use. The 5900x and 5950x are awesome CPUs, but are really targeted more to workstations than everyday or gaming PCs. For a gaming PC the 5800X3D is a better choice. For an everyday PC a 5600 is good enough, and a 5700x is plenty overkill. Answer from aminy23 on reddit.com

Hello guys! I recently upgrade my CPU to a Ryzen 9 5900x and my GPU to a 3070ti, but not sure if my motherboard can handle that. I have an MSI Gaming Plus B550, should I upgrade the motherboard or I’ll do fine?

  • I want to get all the performance from my pc for gaming and 3D

  • Stable overclock (Nothing hardcore)

I am putting together a new PC, main uses are gaming, heavy photo/video editing, and some 3D rendering. Got a 5900x for my CPU. I have everything but the mobo picked out, and am having a tough time narrowing it down. Below is the build, and here is the list of my mobo options:

ROG Strix x570-E

TUF x570-Pro

B550 Aorus Pro

ROG Strix B550-E Gaming

ROG x570 Crosshair VIII Hero

ROG Strix B550-XE

Mag x570 Tomahawk

I am open to other options; I am leaning towards the x570 for the dual pcie-4 slots for increased video/photo storage, but could go for a B550 if it performs better for a better price. Budget is under 400. Any thoughts? Or am I overthinking this too much?

EDIT: to anyone interested, I ended up going with the x570 Aorus Master. It’s on its way, i’ll try to report back here with my thoughts on it for anyone else on the same search as me!

Hello guys

Can anyone chyme in on this build? I'm interested in compatibility, stability, it's intended more for work (numerical analysis, design, engineering,) but also for a bit of gaming / photo editing, etc.

I'm not sure what is the best motherboard for AMD Ryzen 9 5900X .

I'm pretty much sold on the CPU, If there is a better bang for the buck, on the Intel line-up let me know.

The graphics card it's the one I currently have, and it will be upgraded later.

Prob I'll ditch the water-cooled ssd, ignore that.

My current work / gaming set-up it's based on a Intel Core i7-3770K with 32GB and the video card mentioned above, so this upgrade will be day and night difference. Although my CPU it's still fine for most of what I do, execpt really large FEM models.

Thank's

r/buildapc on Reddit: What is the best motherboard for the Ryzen 5900x?

Hello folks. First time poster, long time lurker.

I have finally the means and the opportunity to build my first PC, as I'm moving house and have secured a man cave/WFH office. I am planning on creating an absolute monster to play Cyberpunk on, and to futureproof it for quite some years. I also play a lot of Total War, Skyrim/Witcher 3 with stupid amounts of mods, Star Citizen etc.

I'm going to be getting a Ryzen 9 5900x CPU. Accompanying that I have an ASUS RTX3080 10GB TUF GPU. It's going to be mounted inside a Phanteks P500a.

I've been going around in circles trying to decide on which motherboard I should be getting. The only must-have requirement I have is that it needs to have Wifi & bluetooth. So far I've landed on an ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (Wifi) ATX AM4.

Budget is not an issue, just looking to hear what will get me the most out of my system, for gaming, for years to come.

Your help is much appreciated.

July 31, 2024 - I cannot figure out AMDs naming convention but I know x3d is "best" for gaming ... If you have an AM5 motherboard. ... No, 5800x3D is the old one, in the sense that it was released a few years ago. Architecture wise, it is exactly the same as the newly released 5900XT (with 4 less cores) and 5800XT, with much bigger cache and thus much faster for gaming. ... The next best new one should be the 9800x3d...

r/Amd on Reddit: Recommend me an ATX mobo for 5900X?
September 9, 2021 -

Hello there! I am updating my PC and will be buying a 5900X (when I can get hold of one) and new motherboard. I always find mobos to be the most confusing choice in a build, and would love recommendations.

  • Primary use: Gaming and basic office work.

  • Budget: Not spending over $400, would prefer $200 range unless there is a compelling reason to go higher

  • Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv (ATX)

  • Graphics card: 3080Ti (already have this)

  • Features I'd like: Good onboard WIFI and bluetooth. Lots of storage ports. Modern connectivity/general futureproofing (I try to only upgrade every 3-4 years). Options with sound/video output (I have an Elgato and use my consoles with the PC monitor/sound).

  • Things I don't care about: Overclocking. Watercooling. Easy "tweaking" (I'll probably build this thing and not touch it for years). RGB (In fact, I prefer understated looks. The NZXT N7 B550 looks good to me, as does the ASUS TUF series).

Any and all advice appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT: I think I'll go with the ASUS TUF Gaming X570-PRO Wi-Fi. It doesn't have a front panel USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port, and there are a couple little config things to be aware of per Newegg comments, but otherwise looks like it will serve my needs for a good price.

i have the cpu, but spilled lemonade on the board. water is an insulator, but lemon juice and sugar are both pretty conductive of charge. last time i picked almost at random, so this time i want a different board. reading reviews one at a time sux and even newegg's product filters only bring it down to 95 board choices.

this time, i'd prefer:

  • 2-digit hex display of BIOS boot status

  • onboard status LEDs

  • 5 GHz mem (at least 4.6)

  • onboard pwr switch

  • WiFi (req)

  • CMOS CLR button

  • RST button

  • BIOS upd button

  • 2.5 LAN

obviously 570 chipset. price has to be less than the lemonade board. the guy who owns the house acct i manage saw me tell (here) that i gave $750 house money to Nvidia just to have sex in second life. new MB max = $275 (to allow for tax).

suggestions?

r/buildapc on Reddit: Upgrade to 5900XT? or AM5?
February 8, 2025 -

I am aware that there is a another thread similar to this, but my situation is slightly different due to the different nature of pricing of electronic goods in my country, thus I will be needing thoughts specific to this situation.

My current specs are as follows:
R5 3600X
MSI B450M Mortar Max
RTX 2060 SUPER
32GB DDR4 3200

I built it back in 2020, now I need more power since I have been doing more reinforcement learning, and more productivity based tasks, in which requires more raw CPU power.
I am currently residing in Malaysia, so the prices often differ by quite a margin as compared to the US. I had 2 options:

  1. Upgrade altogether to AM5 - CPU 7900X(RM1900), Mobo (RM650+), RAM (~RM500), all around coming to about RM 3.1k ~ $700 USD.

  2. Upgrade CPU alone to the max of what my motherboard can handle(I retain the RAM and Mobo). The Three CPUs I was eyeing on were:

5900X - RM 1500 ~ $340 USD
5900XT - RM1800 ~ $405 USD
5950x - RM 2300 ~ $520 USD

For me, as I am still a student, price for performance matters a lot. I have been looking at reviews for these chips and noticed one of the only downside of the 5900XT is the fact that you can get a 5950X for cheaper in the US. Other than that, the 5900XT is on par with the 5950X in terms of performance, and is very much cheaper here from where I am from. I am looking to hear others' opinions on this. Are there anything else in which I am missing out? Please let me know if I am misinformed as this upgrade will take a pretty huge toll on my wallet.

Thank you.

Hello, I'm massively uncertain of what CPU to buy, need help ASAP

My current build is very modest, I'm willing to put on it 1k-1.2k USD to upgrade it, just don't know which direction to go.

I use the PC as a workstation for game development, 3D rendering, etc, not fully focused on gaming

My current spec is:

- Ryzen 5 3600x
- RX 590
- B450
- 2x8GB RAM

Do I buy a 5900XT and stay on AM4? Which MOBO will I need to run this CPU on? I don't think my current B450 can handle it, but at the same time, if I have to buy a new MOBO, why don't go for AM5? but which mobo+cpu combo is the best for this price range? for GPU I think I'll just grab a 4060

August 14, 2022 - Motherboard screws. Didn’t fit with the bracket. ... They do fit I had the same issue but just had to make sure the bracket is flush or the screws won’t go in ... Cool. I had to adjust the fan curve to be more aggressive and turned off zero rpm fan mode so it doesn’t get hot too fast. I know AMD cards designed today can touch up to 100C but I used to own an nvda where everytime it touched 90C the card turned off.
