Hard to say without context, but "individuals" is the first word that comes to mind. "Those who...." if context allows. "Many, some, all" for more general use. "Men and women, mankind, humanity." I like to keep a Google tab open for searching synonyms. I'm lazy so I just type "syn ____" (whatever the word) and just change the word whenever I need to search a new one. It will usually show suggestions from a few different sites. I like thesaurus.com, but occasionally it feels a little narrow compared to Google. Answer from Angela_tron on reddit.com

Seconding the other comment, but I also think referring to them as what they do can work well when contextually appropriate. "Audiences" "readers" "listeners" etc. when it works in the essay might be a little cleaner than "those who watch movies" or "the individuals who read this piece."

r/writing on Reddit: Word Choice for a College Essay- Synonyms anybody?
February 2, 2017 -

Hi. I'm currently writing a common app college essay on a change I'd like to make in the world, and I am having some word choice dilemmas.

I am writing about my past struggles with mental illness, and how I would like to solve this widespread problem. As much as I'd like to put more detail into this post, I really don't have the time, so I'll get right to the point.

Here are the ideas that I can't quite find the right word for, bolded texts are the ones I need a word/term for:

'I began taking ADHD medicine' What is a more official medical way for saying this? (verb)

'Supporting others through their hardships taught me the impact of my actions and how good it feels to help others.' What is another word for 'taught me,' that connotes great discovery, revelations and becoming aware of? I'm thinking something along the lines of enlightened, shed light on etc. (verb)

'I will combine my interests and passions to help others fight their mental illness.' I'd like to portray the idea of greatly helping other people deal with a very hard task, uphill battle, particularly one that is personal/relevant to me. I need a verb for helping others win their battle. (verb)

'First, I mildly experienced mental illness for one year. Then, certain events in my life were creating a lot of stress for me, and this set off/began the main duration (5 years/most of the time) and most severe part of my mental illness.' What is a verb for when something bad that has already started goes from bad to worse, going from the beginning stage to the main duration/most severe part?

'First, I mildly experienced mental illness for one year. Then, certain events in my life were creating a lot of stress for me, and this set off/began the main duration (5 years/most of the time) most severe part of my mental illness.' I need a noun for the main/central part, the longest and most severe part.

'As I grew older, I thought I found the medicine that would solve my problems, but instead it caused more problems.' I need a noun for that medicine (possibly combined with an adjective, ex: miracle cure) and a verb (if needed) describing what I thought/hoped the medicine would do for me (I thought it would treat my problems)

'I noticed my grandma with Alzheimers was forgetting my name, this began my awareness for mental illness.' I need a verb (past tense) for when I became aware of mental illness.

FOR EVERY TIME I REFER TO MENTAL ILLNESS (I can't keep on saying "mental illness" over and over every time I mention it) I need nouns, verbs and adjectives for mental illness and the fight that a victim needs to fight agaisnt it (ex: struggle, hardship, battle, problem etc)

LASTLY, WORDS FOR THE RESULTED OF SOMETHING For all the causes and effects, again I need verbs, adjectives and nouns (ex: lead to, induced, caused, resulted in, the result of etc)

THANKS SO MUCH

Use Google for this. Or better yet, be yourself. Great thoughts trump big words.

Practice makes perfect. I nearly finished a 70,000 word book before I started getting much better at this kind of thing. I'll give you some Examples that I wouldn't mind using if this was my own work. I think you might do well by rewording entire sentences if you want to convey a particular concept from that sentence. Also, don't be afraid to elaborate further on things over several sentences. This will not only boost your word count, but it will convey the message more clearly. Sometimes synonyms just aren't going to cut it when you have a message to convey. I began taking ADHD medicine At the beginning of (Time period), I was prescribed a little pink pill for my ADHD symptoms. I took the medicine obediently. Supporting others through their hardships taught me the impact of my actions and how good it feels to help others. The action of helping my peers filled a mentor-ship gap in my life at the time. I learned of the euphoria that comes with helping others, and the weight of misguided support. Some of my decisions lead to dire consequences for (Character) In this next example I think your desired message could easily come across just by adding onto your point. I really think you're expecting too much information to come from a singular verb. This needs more than just a synonym. I will combine my interests and passions to help others fight their mental illness. But, there's more to it than just helping them. I don't think many realize how world-changing a crutch can be to a paralyzed soul climbing to a normal mountain-top. I definitely know how valuable it is. My life grated with similar troubles at one point. Break First, I mildly experienced mental illness for one year. Then, certain events in my life were creating a lot of stress for me, and this set off/began the main duration (5 years/most of the time) most severe part of my mental illness. In short. initiated the bulk of my mental struggles (easy fix) I think what you have presented here just needs a little more effort. As far as mental illness you could call that anything. broken mind Mental handicap Crazy loopy Frankly, anything could mean anything if you provide the right context. I could tell you about a town that calls crazy people Helix's.
