Making something ugly might often involve distorting it, but to promote “distort” as a synonym for “uglify” is very misleading. “Vain” has the original old root meaning of “worthless” but it is almost always used in its figurative sense to describe a person who is "silly, idle, foolish" and perhaps “conceited, proud of petty things or trivial matters". It is also used in the set phrase “in vain” (“without results, to no effect”). Most native English speakers would have no idea what you meant if you used it widely to mean “worthless”. The antique watch was broken and vain. (Incorrect) More on reddit.com
