Web API fuzz testing | GitLab Docs
To ensure API fuzzing scans the latest code, your CI/CD pipeline should deploy changes to a test environment in one of the stages preceding the fuzz stage. If your pipeline is configured to deploy to the same web server on each run, running a pipeline while another is still running could cause a race condition in which one pipeline overwrites the code from another. The API to scan should be excluded from changes for the duration of a fuzzing scan.

Fuzzing APIs. Fuzzing or Fuzz testing is an automated… | by hackysterio | Medium
September 10, 2023 - The aim of Fuzzing is to identify unknown bugs and defects. API Fuzzing is a way of API testing that uses an API’s definition to do testing in an automated way. It creates tests based on schemas, runs them, and reports on success and failures.

API scanning tool recommendations
Are you looking to do DAST or SAST? Also, what testing tools do you already have? A lot of commercial testing tools can do API testing in addition to normal web app testing. Also, how hard are you planning to test it, if you want to do DAST…do you want to just use standard testing that a tool can do, or go full out to use a fuzzer while instrumenting the API? Wfuzz VS ffuf - Which one is the faster web fuzzing tool? [Web Security #1]
ffuf wins hands down for me. It's speed and versatility are excellent. Matched with codingo's ffuf guide and it's a core part of my toolset. More on reddit.com

Fuzzing at the API level can be much faster than fuzzing at the system level, but brings the risk of false alarms by violating implicit preconditions.

API Fuzz Testing: Techniques, Tools, and Best Practices
March 24, 2026 - TL;DR: API fuzz testing sends randomized, malformed inputs to your endpoints to find vulnerabilities that traditional testing misses. Combine schema-aware and stateful fuzzing techniques, embed them in CI/CD, and pair fuzzing with DAST for coverage across both known and unknown risks.

Why Fuzzing Will Help You Build Unbreakable API Endpoints
After a vulnerability or bug is found, modern fuzzers can automatically classify its severity and provide full log information. Since dynamic application security testing (DAST) and interactive application security testing (IAST) tools actually execute the software and feed inputs into the API, most of those tools can identify the input causing the crash.

January 5, 2025 - Identify input parameters: Focus on parameters in the URL, headers, or body that take user input (e.g., query parameters, form fields, or API payloads). Practical Tip: Look for parameters like id, username, email, or password—these are often critical for exploitation. You can also look for file upload or request types that may allow unexpected input. Once you’ve identified the fuzzable parameters, the next step is to craft payloads.

Using an OpenAPI specification, it can generate an initial input corpus consisting of sequences of requests. These are mutated with REST-specific and LibAFL-provided mutators to explore different code paths in the software under test.

In GitLab 14.0 and later, you must define a fuzz stage in your .gitlab-ci.yml file. In GitLab 13.12 and earlier, the API fuzzing template defines build, test, deploy, and fuzz stages. The fuzz stage runs last by default. The predefined stages were deprecated, and removed from the API-Fuzzing.latest.gitlab-ci.yml template.
