Confused about AirPods vs other earbuds for iPhone
Sound quality doesn’t work like that. It isn’t something objective or easily quantifiable. At the end of the day, you’re going to think something has better sound quality if it’s tuned more towards what you like. So the frequency response, measured and shown on a graph, is an invaluable tool to get an idea of how close something sounds to what you prefer. This takes a decent understanding of various components of sound perception to be able to digest everything. And of course, time and the experience you get from experimenting with different tuning styles. AirPods Pro are excellent earbuds, particularly if you have at least one Apple device to control, update and tweak them. You can of course use them with anything else that has Bluetooth. The AAC codec is best implemented on Apple devices as it’s a processor intensive codec compared to other options due to its psychoacoustic modeling. But as mentioned above, it’s the tuning of the earbuds that stand above all else when it comes to what you would consider to be high quality. If you’re using your earbuds on an Apple device, make sure they support AAC. If you plan to use them heavily on another device, check for which advance codecs they support (APTX, LDAC, etc.) and make sure the earbuds you’re interested in support it. People can’t tell you which earbuds could sound close to what you like until you specify which tuning styles you prefer. Similar to how we can’t suggest which ice cream to buy until you tell us what are some of your favorite flavors. People can only tell you which earbuds provide a well done implementation of a given “ice cream flavor.” Another way to see it is, just because I don’t like mint chocolate chip ice cream doesn’t mean that a well done mint chocolate chip ice cream is somehow bad quality. It can use a great recipe with high quality ingredients, I just don’t prefer the flavor… see? AirPods Pro are excellent earbuds because they’re so well rounded and are near the top of performance in many areas, like transparency and ANC for example. They’re also high performers in a lot of other technical aspects like noise floor, signal strength, latency, etc. It’s clear these are elite earbuds. Their tuning style is a bit more relaxed without excessive bass and highs that some people are accustomed to. So some may inaccurately say they have “bad sound quality.” They lean towards a more accurate and less exaggerated response. What’s very nice too is their response accounts for the Fletcher-Munson curve or equal loudness contours. This calls for a boost to the low and high frequencies as you lower the volume in order to maintain a similar tonal balance regardless of volume. This is because humans perceive mid range frequencies to be louder than low and high frequencies when all are played at the same volume, particularly as you go down in volume. One final note is that your Jabra 75t have a pretty crazy tuning style. And not necessarily in a bad way, they were actually sought after by many. They have a very exaggerated yet controlled bass response. So chances are, whatever you compare it to, will sound jarringly different and noticeably less bassy. It’s doesn’t mean the new earbuds are necessarily low quality. It’ll just be a different flavor that you may not be used to. Over a short amount of time, you will adjust and could even prefer it when going back to compare. It’s all subjective. More on reddit.com

r/Earbuds on Reddit: Confused about AirPods vs other earbuds for iPhone
March 16, 2024 -

I am researching which earbuds should replace my jabra 75t in used with my iPhone and, less importantly, a windows laptop (laptop for teams calls only). My main concern is sound quality when listening to music. I mainly listen to acoustic guitar driven songs and jazz. I rarely use ANC on my current earbuds.

Reading on the forum I get a bit confused about the AirPod pro 2’s. Some state they are the only relevant choice when paired with and iPhone, both due to integration (which I don’t value a lot) and due to better connectivity which would result in better sound quality in the end. Other posts still say that other earbuds will have higher sound quality even with the lower bitrate when connected to the iPhone. As an example: I can buy the AirPod pro 2 and the Denon Perl pro at approximately the same price. Which would get me the better sound quality on an iPhone? The better connected AirPod pros or the seemingly more highly rated denon?

I saw one post mentioning that Bose might have the higher bit rate as the AirPods. Maybe that would be the choice then?

(Currently streaming from Spotify, but would be willing to change to Apple Music if that changes the answer)

used with my iPhone and, less importantly, a windows laptop (laptop for teams calls only). Sounds like you're leaning towards the APP2. They are technically excellent earbuds, but just be aware you won't get multipoint support for seamless switching between iPhone and PC. If you're listening to something on your laptop and a call comes in on iPhone (or vise versa), the buds won't auto switch over. It's a manual process of you going to the device settings of the "new" device and hitting connect... but this doesn't always work reliably. Likewise if you're connected to iPhone and want to switch to laptop, usually I can open BT settings in Windows & hit connect. Then the pc will "steal" the connection from the iPhone. But this doesn't always work. Sometimes I have to 1st turn off BT, or manually go into BT Settings and disconnect the buds (slower process), and then I have to go back to Windows and connect again (not talking about pairing the buds again, just reconnecting). There's no rhyme or reason when it works or fails, which makes it even more frustrating. Also if i wake my pc from sleep or hibernate, it will steal the connection from the iPhone which is really weird bc it doesn't/can't do this at any other time! All this is to say APP2 don't support multipoint with non-Apple ecosystem devices. It's a PITA. If you really want seamless, automatic switching between iphone & win laptop, look for an earbud that supports true multipoint.

Answer (1 of 5): No. Absolutely not. Not even close to “good”, in my books. The AirPods “Pro”? Yes. Absolutely! They’re wonderful and surely worth considered in the Top 5, with the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro, Bose QC Earphones, Sony XM4s. But the regular Airpods?
