r/archlinux on Reddit: Nvidia or nvidia-dkms?
September 15, 2023 -

I plan on installing Linux and linux-lts kernels. Do i need to install both the corresponding Nvidia drivers, or do i need to install the dkms one to use with both?

I plan to use the main kernel, and just have the lts one for if something breaks like it did once. The lts kernel came in handy when there was some AMD bug business not long ago. But then i used mesa and didn't care about drivers lol.

The wiki says dkms is for the zen kernel and others which i don't plan on using, but i also saw online people say to install dkms if you plan on using multiple kernels...

Can someone shed some light on this and explain? Which driver is for use with both linux and linux-lts?

Arch Linux's Main NVIDIA Driver Packages Now Using The Open Kernel Modules - Phoronix
December 20, 2025 - The Arch Linux project announced today they have transitioned to using the Open Kernel Modules for their main NVIDIA driver packages. "With the update to driver version 590, the NVIDIA driver no longer supports Pascal (GTX 10xx) GPUs or older. We will replace the `nvidia` package with `nvidia-open`, `nvidia-dkms` with `nvidia-open-dkms`, and `nvidia-lts` with `nvidia-lts-open`. **Impact:** Updating the NVIDIA packages on systems with Pascal, Maxwell, or older cards will fail to load the driver, which may result in a broken graphical environment.

r/archlinux on Reddit: Do nvidia-dkms and nvidia packages conflict with each other?
May 2, 2020 -

I use Arch with the latest linux kernel + nvidia driver.

I want to try a linux-zen kernel and I need to install dkms and nvidia-dkms packages.

Can I easily switch between kernels? Should I delete nvidia-dkms if I use linux (delete nvidia if I use linux-zen respectively)?

May 2, 2017 - You install 'nvidia-dkms' if you're using/compiling custom kernels that do not have an accompanying nvidia package. There is no point or benefit to using 'nvidia-dkms' otherwise (such as in any of the above mentioned cases). See also: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA

Arch having issues with nvidia or nvidia-dkms or nvidia-open - Linux - Level1Techs Forums
June 28, 2025 - I build a new PC. So far I had an old rx580 in that system as I was saving for the GPU. Everything was working great. Now I bought the 5090 and of course I have had multiple issues so far. If I install the nvidia or nvidia-dkms packages I only get one of the displayport output for my two monitors to work and the system is unable to start hyprland.
