Use the m.2_0 slot as that should be directly connected to CPU. Second m.2 tends to be connected through chipset, hence why Sata 5/6 might be disabled if you use it. Please refer to the motherboard user manual to help determine this info. Answer from MonopolyMeal on reddit.com

Asus X570 pro 2nd m.2 nvme slot - Internal Hardware
May 18, 2026 - 16 of these will be taken by the GPU. As I understand it, four are reserved for a link to the X570 chipset, and four are available for the M2_1 slot. M2_2 is connected to the X-570 chipset which is also PCIe 4.0 capable.

r/buildapc on Reddit: How would two M2 NVMEs work on ASUS PRIME X570-Pro
April 28, 2021 -

Hi new builder here!

I was planning on using the ASUS PRIME X570-PRO and going double M2s, how would that work on this board? I’ve heard that on some boards going double M2 might affect the GPU and it’s bandwidth since the second M2 place some times share lanes with the GPU depending on which board you use or something like that... My local shop told me to check the manual but I thought I would ask you guys at the same time... Do any of you know if going two M2s on it will work fine or will it affect my GPU and Im better of just going one M2 and one SATA instead?

So quick question, long time computer user , first time computer builder!

I have the Asus Prime X570-Pro (like it says in the title) and it has two M.2 slots. the lower one has a heatsink, the upper does not. I know generally the rule of thumb is to place the NVME in the upper slot but since the lower has a heatsink will the lower work for a NVME installed for my OS?

r/buildapc on Reddit: Any expert on Asus Prime x570 Pro? Question about PCIe lanes and M.2 slots
June 30, 2023 -

The motherboard has 3 16x PCIe slots but the bottom one is 4x only. There is also 2 M.2 slot, both are PCIe 4.0 with suitable CPU. What I can't find is: are the M.2 slot shared with any of PCIe slots? That is if I plugged an M.2 drive or both, would one of the PCIe slot be 8x rather than 16x? I tried reading the manual but it's gibberish to me. All I can tell is the top PCIe slot is 16x if the middle slot is empty, and both slots will be 8x if both are occupied. Or would using 5800x3D allow both to be 16x?

Gimmie PCI, there were no lanes and no need to juggle expansion cards and different slots to get the best performance.

Using AMD 5800x3D CPU BTW

I'm getting an Asus Prime X570-pro motherboard and it has a heat sink and a fan on the bottom m.2 slot. I'm also getting a hot boy WD SN850 SSD. I couldn't find the heat sink version of that SSD and I figured I didn't need it because I have a heat sink on my motherboard. The issue is that I have seen several reviews saying that you won't get the full speeds from the SSD if you put it in the slot further from the CPU. Does that apply to this motherboard too? Because if so, then why would Asus put a heat sink on the m.2 slot that doesn't even have the capacity to use the full speed of hot SSDs?

I have the same board.... x570 pro "It is actually noticed i had it for years on the bottom slot of my Asus Prime x570 pro and i just switched it yesternight on 6 december 2024 and i was using it since 2020 But now on the upper M.2 slot next (underneath) to the CPU i am now finding out that my computer is MUCH more responsive and JUST FASTER!!! When i click something i immediately opens.. for example i have in one folder 8024 PNG files and they are big like 2-4mb per file (they are screen shots of websites i have been and saw something important enough to take memory screen shots) But yeah... they use to take maybe a second or two seconds to show the avatar image when i scroll through the entire folder but now... its instantly i see a picture instead of a default no logo, no icon file and then a second or two i see an image=no more... it used to take such a long time in computer time... but if i now go to a folder with 1000 pictures they spawn instantly.. the 8000+ pics in a folder ALMOST instant, it is still better then 2-3 even 4 seconds.. i hated scrolling through large folders and always cut them in smaller portions, like 16 folders with only 500 pictures.. now i can do up to 8000 pics in one folder and they are still loading up fast... I have literally been using it for 4 years straight without knowing and today i found out that it is actually faster to put the M.2 ssd in the slot near the CPU for BEST usage and best speed for your computer for daily usage.. i now flip through folders and i dont even have time to sip my tea cause it is already done... the copying is also faster... the opening of pictures, the scrolling through pictures is also faster.. just literally everything.. opening applications, folders, pictures, web browsers... its instant or seconds faster... According to the user manual, both M.2 slot can run at PCIE 4.0 so you are fine using the bottom one.
