Now that we have some love for the ROG chassis and case fan line, how are we feeling about these offerings?
Just unboxed my ASUS ROG Chronox, and I wanted to share some quick first impressions before I move my build into it.
For context, I’m currently using a Phanteks NV7, so that’s what I’m comparing it against. Visually, the Chronox looks amazing, and I do like some of the design ideas. The magnetic glass release is nice, the rear/backplate release mechanism is cool, and overall it has a very unique look.
That said, I have mixed feelings on the build quality. Compared to my NV7, the Chronox does not feel as sturdy. The NV7 feels more solid and rigid overall. The Chronox looks premium, but the frame and panels don’t give me the same confidence when handling it.
One issue I noticed right away is the top mesh panel. On my unit, it keeps falling off when I pick up or move the case. When I inspected it, the mesh looked slightly warped. It still works, but it doesn’t go on smoothly and doesn’t feel as secure as I expected.
Another thing is handling the case after the build is complete. With the NV7, I can pick up the whole case confidently because it has a solid steel base. With the Chronox, I’m honestly not sure where I’m supposed to safely lift it from once everything is installed. It feels like I may need to place the main frame on the desk first, then install the back, top, and glass panels after.
The power button is also recessed and a little harder to press than I expected. Not a huge deal, but worth mentioning.
Shipping was rough too. FedEx gave the box the “premium treatment” sarcasm intended. The front of the box had a tear in it. Luckily, ASUS used thick foam at the bottom and the glass was not damaged. The box also has a pull-tab style design, which kind of reminded me of my old Dell Alienware Aurora R7 packaging.
Overall, the case looks incredible, but my first impression is that the NV7 feels more sturdy and better built structurally. I’ll know more once I actually transfer my build into it, but so far I’m a little mixed.
