September 21, 2020 - If you choose that motor, I would recommend going with a 7 inch (Approx. 178mm) drive wheel to hit a little over 5200 SFPM. It’s a little large but it is certainly within reason. ... Choose one with 3hp, I have one with 2hp and I stop it when doing heavy grinding. You also need to take notice of the rpm, depending on the diameter of the driving wheel. My grinder has a 125mm wheel and the motor is 3450rpm.

December 10, 2017 - A standard 1.5 kW (2 HP), 4-pole motor or a 2.2 kW (3 HP) 2-pole motor will have a 90-frame. The rule-of-thumb for belt grinder motor power in industry is 1 HP per inch of belt width (750W per 25mm).

November 29, 2009 - My preference would be a DC motor rated to around 200-250 VDC. I could then build a PWM circuit to control the speed and run it from the numerous 240 VAC outlets I put in my shop. From what I've read and my own experience as a machinist, I will design this grinder to have belt speeds of between 15 and 30 m/s.

For these reasons we chose to only offer USA made motors. The most common drive setup for a belt grinder is a pair of bearing blocks which supports the drive shaft with the drive wheel on one end and a single or step pulley on the other, like our Mod-3 grinder.

January 20, 2018 - I run my belt grinder on 6000 SFPM .Most knife maker as I read here run on 4000 SFPM . Now I almost finished my new grinder which will run on max. 9000 SFPM .You can use this to calculate speed with motors you have with different size drive wheel .............

November 24, 2009 - When VFD's on AC motors or speed controller on DC motors things will change a bit, but the controllers will generally maintain constant torque. which is just what you want.2thumbs So that means I would run a disc grinder directly with a 1750 motor but a belt grinder I would add a VFD to maintain torque at higher than base speeds.

The drive wheel would also stand 1-inch taller, relative to the plate the motor's mounted to, so the 72-inch belt [essentially] gets tightened by employing the 184T frame motor. As I recall, most of the 2 x 72 belt grinders that I've seen employ a spring-loaded tracking mechanism to keep tension on the sanding belt during operation.
