I'm looking for stuff I may have missed as I feel like I've only seen a handful of horror movies over the last three years or so. What's making your list?
seeing as were reaching the half way point of the 2020s I want to hear everyone picks for best movies of the half decade. it was a rough start with Pandemic shutting down most movie production. but I think horror has made a comeback with great movies like oddity, Nosferatu, and my personal favorite of this year Late Night with the devil. So what are your guys top picks.
Videos
Been craving a good horror film the past few days and I'd like to watch one from 2020s as I feel I haven't watched too many of them because i primarily watch horror films pre 2020.
When it comes to what kind of horror film I wanna watch to be honest I have no preference. It would of course be ideal if it actually is scary and not just simply a thriller but if you can't think of anything scary then please mention the thriller film you think of.
Thank you in advance

My top 20 fav horror films of the last 4 years. What am I missing? (sorry Terrifier 2 fans i just don’t get the hype)
I've been really out of the loop the past 3 or so years with all types of films. I love a film that has some good writing and direction, especially. Gore tend to do nothing for me.
I've seen Midsommar, but that might be the last horror movie I've seen since like 2022, or whichever year it came out. I loved it. The implication of it being broad daylight really made it work.
Do you have any good recommendations? Especially critically acclaimed ones. But I'll be interested in checking out mostly anything. Thanks!

I really love some of these films but 2020 is not going to be looked back upon favorably in this regard, either. Add it to the reasons this has been a pretty meh year. Thanks for the list, though!
I designed the practical effects for three of the top ten films on this list. That’s a pretty great end to the year.

Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls (a guilty pleasure, I understand that this is most like not on 95% of peoples top 10)
For me personally I will have to choose, When Evil Lurks (2023). That dog scene alone was nightmare fueled. I really do believe indie horror and foreign films have really elevated the genre.
(2019) The Platform 9.5/10
This movie is brutal, disgusting and unrelenting horror. I’d love to do a full analysis here but I’m strict on the no-spoilers but I will say, this isn’t one for the weak. it contains some really upsetting, graphic scenes and most of its runtime is drenched in this nihilistic nature that feels helpless. I loved it.
(2019) Annabelle Comes Home 7/10
I loved that all the possessed artifacts come into play. My favorite one is this future predicting TV. The scene where it’s introduced is genuinely scary as fuck.
(2019) Joker 9.5/10
This film intentionally evokes almost every emotion until a raw, chilling finale. Gotham is unkempt, unstable and teetering. It’s not entirely horror per-say but check it out regardless.
(2019) The Color Out of Space 7/10
I love the body horror and I think the entire movie is pretty goddamn exciting in that aspect. It goes so far beyond what you’d expect.
(2018) The Nightingale 9.5/10
Jennifer Kent decided to put in such a universally disgusting scene that had people walking out of screenings and almost justifiably so. It’s really difficult to watch in portions. It’s just fortunate she followed it up with a masterpiece. All the slightly pleasant interactions with the natives. The ongoing horror, racism and torture by the colonials; I’ve never seen such a raw and vulnerable film in the past 10 years.
(2018) Overlord 8/10
It’s kind of difficult to describe but I think action-war-horror would be the closest thing I could pin it too. Jovan Adepo was a great fucking lead.
(2008) Lake Mungo 9/10 The horror is hidden in every frame and simultaneously interwoven with heartbreak. Despite many previous and later films attempting to do what it does, I’ve never seen anything like it.
(2004) Saw 8/10
It’s one of the most creative projects of the 00’s and a project that launched Wan’s and Whannell’s career. I can safely say, the two of them haven’t had any major misses since. This movie is raw, disturbing and has a strong mystery-driven backbone that makes it iconic and endlessly re-watchable.
(1999) Deep Blue Sea 7.5/10
The science-fiction aspects may be super contrived to someone smarter than I am but the entire movie is so goddamn entertaining. I love all the characters and LL Cool J is particularly hilarious.
(1995) Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight 7/10
It’s kind of like Evil Dead meets From Dusk till Dawn. Billy Zane is great in it and just brings a ton of personally to the film. I even really dug the raunchy, meta-horror opening.
(1990) The Exorcist 3 8.5/10
All the performances are excellent and the special effects, all basically practical (minus a few) are just fucking fantastic. It’s to the point that I would consider this body horror, at least in the finale of the film.
(1987) Fatal Attraction 7.5/10
Holy shit Glenn Close you goddamn crazy bitch, such a great performance. This movie is so incredibly and exponentially tense as it plays out. I loved Micheal Douglas and the entire film is just a reminder to never fucking cheat.
(1987) The Lost Boys 8/10
Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys is so indicative of 80’s horror that it could very well be the face of the decade itself. The one-liners, the practical effects, aesthetics and story are all just wonderful.
(1984) Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter 7/10
Jason is super fucking powerful here; he moves quickly, intelligently and is able to drive the suspense of the movie. Coupled with so many memorable moments, the success is greatly attributed to performances by Crispin Glover but more importantly, Corey Feldman. I know Corey gets a lot of shit these days but he was an eclectic child actor.
(1979) The Amityville Horror 7/10
The film has both pacing issues as well as dialogue issues. With that being said though, the finale in sinister as fuck and really brings life, quite literally, to this evil house.
(1975) Satanico Pandemonium 7/10
This is a pretty great, atmospheric, old-school exploitation film. It dives right into the temptations of sex and the devil among this convent. It gets pretty fucking dark, especially for the time period, specifically for Mexican horror.
(1972) Horror Express 8/10
I’d be hard-pressed to say it’s not one of the better horror/sci-fi films of the 70’s and that category includes some great fucking films. I absolutely love the dialogue and progression.
(1964) The Last Man on Earth 7.5/10
Price films tend to have this warm, campy feel to them but this one actually felt pretty dark and desolate. It still contains those less-serious scenes and bits of dialogue but the writing and ideas themselves feel like a huge leap forward for the horror genre.
Like the title best horror movie of this decade in your opinion. Imo it's the substance like hands down. I'm a a HUGE body horror fan so it just hit all the right buttons for me. Best body horror movie of the decade that's for sure.
2020+ PEOPLE LOL THIS CURRENT DECADE 2020- 2025 WHY DO I HAVE TO PUT THIS HERE? DO Y'ALL NOT KNOW WHAT A DECADE IS?
I've been somewhat largely out of the loop. Aside from seeing Firestarter literally today I haven't seen anything new in ages. Looking to build a bit of a watch-list and I'd appreciate any and all suggestions, even for things that are just okay.
Here is everything I've seen from the 2020s.
2020 is almost over, and nothing really interesting is coming out in the next month. So, ladies and gentlemen, which is the best horror movie released in 2020?
Haven’t seen a lot of new horror movies, but since Halloween is coming up, I’m in the mood to see some. But I personally wanna be terrified and know the top most terrifying movies from these years.
Hereditary scared me. The Ring scared me. I enjoyed the new Pet Sematary, wasn’t totally scared though. It Follows scared me. I’m trying to find the scariest ones!
It Comes At Night did not scare me.
None of the Annabelles, Conjuring, or Paranormal Activities scare me.
Or maybe ones I’ve missed from the past 10 years that are terrifying.
Let me know what you think!
