"the Department of Variance of Somewhere, Ohio" (56 @ 4.6/5) and "the Dead Letter Office of Somewhere, Ohio" (47 @ 4.9/5) are both quite interesting in my opinion and also underappreciated. My understanding is that you're supposed to listen to Dead Letter Office first and then Department of Variance, but at least for me I understood more listening in the opposite order. The super quick summary for Department of Variance is "first day of work at a SCP-esque group". And the super quick summary of Dead Letter Office is spooky letters that couldn't be delivered, with a few touching stories included. Department of Variance is very serialized, while Dead Letter Office is mostly serialized but less strict. I know these aren't super unknown, but Department of Variance didn't make the cut in any of the yearly popularity polls & Dead Letter Office tied for 26th on the 2022 poll. Just looking down the list of my subscriptions in my podcast app and I see AppStories, Automators, iPhone Life, and Mac Power Users. Any thoughts on gems I might be missing or ones I should try? I’m really looking for ones that are app oriented, including reviews, tips, workflows, etc. More on talk.macpowerusers.com

Hi I just downloaded the new podcasts app from Apple and I want to get more into listening to podcasts. I've found a few that I like, (mostly sports related), but I want to find some disability related podcasts. I've heard of some good ones before, but I don't remember the names of any of them. See other comment for list of ratings of podcasts I’ve listened to. From that list, here are the ones with lowest rating which I particularly recommend. I’ll skip other podcasts which I’ve talked at length about in other posts, such as Desert Skies, The Lost Cat, etc etc. Fawx and Stallion which has 46 ratings. Details and summary: One complete season so far. Full cast. A mystery comedy about Sherlock Holmes neighbors, the ones who don’t get any mysteries thrown their way. Already such a great premise in my opinion. The characters lament their lack of opportunity to get even one mystery, when Sherlock and Watson fortunately go on vacation! Thoughts: Great balance of jokes and plot. Unexpectedly sophisticated character development and growth later in the season. Still mostly a comedy, but has depth and a real knowledge of both natural, meaningful character conflict and resolution. The Wyrd Side which has 4 ratings. Just 4! A crime, I tell you. Details and summary: Eight episodes so far. Very new, maybe 2-3 months old? Full cast but centers around two podcast hosts diving into unsolved mysteries of British folklore. Very much reminiscent of Lovecraft Investigations in the partnership of the two characters, and the way the plot thickens from a focus of finding content for podcasts to a bigger mystery that puts the characters in danger. Thoughts: The two protagonist hosts have an excellent relationship that makes me care about them when they eventually fall into danger after probing too deep in their mysteries. Great dialogue, and like Fawx and Stallion, an adept hand at weaving in a larger story through smaller details.

My podcast world has become so much better since I joined this community. Thanks for all the recs! So what’s the podcast you found here that you’re the most grateful for?
Mine is The Blindboy Podcast. I have never connected with a podcast so deeply. I’m learning a ton and it has heart, soul, and humor. I can’t believe I might have missed out on this podcast if it weren’t for some member of this community recommending it to someone.

Dungeons and Daddies, hands down. I used to listen to lots of emotionally heavy stuff, like Snap Judgement or Heavyweight. And a lot of podcasts that delved the shittier side of humanity - Behind the Bastards, Knowledge Fight, Cults. Then my dad died, and I needed something that didn’t make me feel like even more shit. Found Dungeons and Daddies recommended on some post here and gave it a try, and it’s been an amazingly fun ride.
