Question about combo belt sanders - which style is better?
Or rather which style is used for which tasks? I assume there has to be a reason you might want a skinny belt with no solid backing as opposed to a wider belt with support underneath. I’ve always assumed I’d go with the wider belt style but as I’m shopping and seeing the thinner one I’m curious why one would choose that model style instead 🤔 NOTE: these are not the ones I’m considering they’re just a photo used for reference. August 17, 2014 - It's almost identical to this one except for the switch. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rockwell-De...832?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ce5e4a988 It's been used for metal work its entire life. I use a 60 grit disc and an 80 grit belt. It came out of a machine shop I closed down in 1999.

Bench Belt/disc Sander recommendations | The International Association of Penturners
March 8, 2021 - after turning- if needed final squaring by hand sanding with a jig that uses little discs of and paper on a mandrel that keeps your tube square to the sanding disc (some guy on here sells these jigs at a reasonable price) If you are still set on a power sander - there is a commercial jig - I believe it would work best dead center on the disc - which I think means you will go through the center area of those expensive 12" sand discs - and I agree not much difference in any of the combo bench top sanders - probably better with a 12" disc BUT the most important part of the equation is if the sanding table can be squared to the disc and is big enough to use that commercial jig - my 6" combo sander table wasn't big enough for my squaring jig
