Most stores do not offer installation services anymore. Car installations are becoming a bygone era as most people drive cars manufactured within the last 10-15 years. Those cars routinely have CarPlay/Bluetooth already making installations an obsolete service. In the next few years, you will see BBY stop that completely. r/Bestbuy on Reddit: Question on Car Radio Installs
March 19, 2024 -

Hey yall,

Just set an appointment today to have a stereo installed. I purchased the stereo from Best Buy to qualify for the free install. My car has both a backup cam and steering wheel controls. I went out of my way to purchase a full install kit with the wiring harnesses (stereo, backup cam, steering controls, usb adapter etc), dash kit, the whole nine yards.

When I was scheduling the appointment, the fella let me know that I would still have to pay for the labor on the steering wheel controls ($64.99) and for the backup cam ($149.99)

Do I really have to pay 150 for them to join a few wires to my existing OEM backup cam? It seems absurd and at that rate I’d rather go through the process of doing it myself. Any feedback would be appreciated!

April 21, 2025 - The car stereo specialists were quoting me around a thousand for the unit, wiring harness, and adapter kit. I got it done at Best Buy for around half that and my installer was knowledgeable, friendly, did great work and I have no complaints.

February 19, 2022 - Just curious if someone has and tried Best Buy installation of their CarPlay units. It’s free installation so it might be worth trying out but if a lot of people have had bad experiences and their car gets messed up then not worth it ... I’ve done it in the past. In NJ. No issue at all. Edit- and yes, the harness and marine the frame may cost extra. It’s not overly expensive though… ... I’m pretty sure OP was referring to free installation, not a free stereo...

r/CarAV on Reddit: Does bestbuy service car radio installation?
December 2, 2024 -

I’m planning to install an aftermarket car radio in my 2017 Honda Accord. The unit I ordered just arrived today, and I tried installing it myself, but I don’t have the proper tools, so I’m thinking about getting it installed at Best Buy.

On their website, I see a service called "In-Dash Car Stereo Installation" for $130. Is this the right service for installing an aftermarket head unit? Has anyone used Best Buy for this kind of installation before?

Also, how do I make an appointment for the installation? Can I book it online, or do I need to call or visit a store?

Went to bestbuy.com, entered my car information, selected a single din-receiver I liked, bought the recommended accessories to ship in and Geek Squad installation was free on this particular head unit. Went to the store per my appointment and in an hour they were done, said I had a bad fuse they replaced and as an added bonus the automatic lock system in my old car works again too. They showed me how everything on the system worked and asked if I had any questions. It was much cheaper than what my car mechanic was offering and everything works great. I definitely recommend geek squad for CarAv installation.

I've been a total tech member for a few years and it used to be great, most products had the option for free installation. However, the list of products that offer it at checkout (online) seems to be dwindling day by day. Can we create a list of products that are actually eligible for free installation?

February 13, 2024 - Back when I worked at Best Buy a stereo install was so cheap and everyone there was competent enough to do it. It's not that hard. If you don't want to do the work yourself I dont see the problem with letting them handle it. ... Yeah, I have no doubt that the installers know what they are doing. But it’s not everyday they work on a Lamborghini and mistakes taking off panels can be expensive. ... With a car the age of a murcielago, breaking dried out plastic clips on interior panels is almost inevitable.

I have always taken my vehicles to car audio shops as I usually get full systems installed. The quote I got just to put a double DIN head unit in my wife's Highlander seemed high. Considering trying a Best Buy. Any input?

Best Buy installer here For just popping in a head unit, I'd guesstimate like 90% of the stores with installers should be able to do a decent job. I looked through a few of the comments, saw you have a Highlander with the JBL system and navigation, I just didn't see the year of the vehicle anywhere. A 2004 Highlander is going to require different parts than a 2018 Highlander, I'm sure you know I can even DM you an exact quote that will not vary by store if you want. The quotes are universal "worst case" scenarios, no sale prices included on the head units or parts or anything on the quote. Entry level to Android Auto is ~$350 for the head unit alone, as I never recommend the Boss head units. But buying a head unit $200 or over and they install them for free, if the harness we need retains the steering wheel controls on it's own (Like the PAC RP4.2-TY11, for example), that's included. If you need a secondary steering wheel control retention device (Maestro ADS-MSW, for example), that costs $60 on it's own, $65 to install, $125 total in addition to the dash kit, wiring harness, possibly antenna adapter. Guesstimate (if it needs the $50 dash kit) 350+50+160+14 is the worst-case scenario, ~$574 Head unit, dash kit, pac harness, antenna adapter If you're near the DFW Texas area, I can give you my shop's direct line. I'm not sure how install bays around the country are booking right now, my district has lost ~6 full-time installers recently, so we're still catching up on their scheduled installs and booking into early January as it is, which is one prohibitor. Smaller shops might be able to get you in sooner. Best of luck, stud

You have to realize the cost of the module needed to retain certain functions If your keeping it with the stock system minus the head unit and like the guy said are you retaining the back up camera or steering wheel controls etc also if you need some type of hi to low level converter or a module to integrate with your factory system if has a amplifier or not but I would not use best buy

r/Bestbuy on Reddit: Best Buy/Total Tech for car stereo with warranty
February 4, 2023 -

I have an '08 Porsche Turbo that needs the head unit replaced. I have an extended warranty (non-factory) that will cover the replacement. I'll be paying upfront and the warranty company will reimburse me later. However, they'll need to talk to the installer and depending on the cost (if it's over $1,000), they'll send an appraiser out to inspect. Is this something that Best Buy can do?

Also, I have Total Tech from a TV purchase a few weeks ago. What type of savings or benefits would I realize when using Best Buy's car stereo services. Thank you in advance.

I somehow amassed a decent amount of Best Buy gift cards, and am considering a replacement of my ancient factory head unit (but not the speakers) with something more functional.

I have sufficient tools and knowledge to install it myself, but I can think of several other things I would rather do on a Saturday. Is the free installation that comes with most units from Best Buy “good enough” in terms of concealing the microphone wiring, positioning the microphone and satellite antenna, etc.? If so, is one store considerably better than the others for installation?
