r/OntarioGardeners on Reddit: Some very low maintenance perennial plants that good for edging and border or ground cover . ( And also no invasive)
December 15, 2023 -

I have a few these plants i think they are really low maintenance and serve as border/edging and no invasive, in my experience, i have use them in sunny/ partial sun, partial shade to deep shade and they are very adaptable in different types of soil and also quite drought tolerance.

1-2 Japanese sedge " ice dance " ( carex " ice dance ") this grass like plants are actually an evergreen in warmer region, they perform well if you have enough moisture, but they also grow under my silver maple and juniper, forsythia, oaks .you know how taught to grow under a big tree. they will grow well in morning sun and afternoon shade, but it doesn't matter as long as there are some moisture, they can survive. 3. Another Japanese sedge " kaga nishiki" ( carex " kaga nishiki / gold fountain)very attractive bright and gold/green variegated fine foliage and also very adaptable , i have used it in a shade and dry area , hardy water, as long as the soil is deep and they don't mind clay .

4 &5 Geranium Cambridge or geranium cantabrigiense, I call them little pink geranium, this is one of my favorite ground cover for little garden site , especially under a standard looking small tree ( like hydrangea, service berry , lilacs ) or a pole, mailbox , birdbath, or a tree stump, you want to make it look pretty and natural in a square corner, or a long walkway but not much soil, they basically don't need much soil , and they can easily remove or just cutting the stems and stuck in a moist top soil and start rooting, they can grow in full sun and shade , will change the color of leaves with seasons interest and have pink little flowers in spring, and I don't need to do anything but water if water gets hot once a week. They over winter easily don't need any protection and grow fast and cover up the place you need .

6&7 Big root geranium ( geranium macrorhizum) this is another perennial I use it in a place with the less care but taught and can't water or enough sun area, like a garden I help with a Norwegian maple and linden and after I pull out all the ivy and periwinkle, they spread fast, sun or shade , as long as it is a cool condition on the ground ( give them tree leaves in fall just cover them ) and water every two week, they are fine and they also has a pink/purple color flowers in spring, they are good looking when you plants in a long path , a big tree , a slope and a corner with a big plants or small tree .

8. Big Lamb Ear - if you want some this silvery, wooly , fluffy and soft plants , I have plenty to give. The real name stachys Byzantina " Helen Von stein" , they look nice when you grow them in a big area, and their leaves also bigger then the original lamb's ear, but they don't flower much like the original one, which is better so they won't flope and leggy, they grow well with variety of soil, and also can tolerate part sun to a bit shade , if you have a slope or a big area want to have a stunning looking, they will look great in a lane way, or a darker background, this plants like clay soil and do well without much water .

9-11creeping phlox. Well this is a sunny ground cover perennial without much care, in Japan they grow mass on a hill side or a slope side and it looks amazing when they bloom, has many colors from white, pink, red, pink , purple, can handle 40 c sun to -40 c freezing and if you want to make it nice, grow them with some rocks, under a sunny side tree or edge and they don't need much care , only water them and give them some soil after bloom and it will look nice in a open area .

Well hopefully will help some people like to have simple plants and low maintenance.

Plants for edging garden/barrier
I totally get it—I dealt with the same issue when grass kept creeping into my garden beds no matter how much mulch I used. What finally worked for me was planting chives and lavender along the border. They formed a thick enough barrier to block grass without becoming a problem themselves. Dwarf comfrey is also great—it stays put and suppresses weeds. If you combine that with deep edging like bricks or rocks, it should help keep things under control. Hope that helps! 😊 More on reddit.com

Ideas for edging plants between lawn and road. Zone 7b/8a.

Sorry for the bad picture! The slope is more extreme than the image suggests. We’re on a busy through road and the stope is too significant at the edge, which makes it pretty impossible to mow safely. I was thinking of possible plants to edge the lawn, but any/all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

27 Best Border Plants for Pretty Garden Paths and Beds in 2025
May 7, 2025 - Traditionally, gardeners have been known to turn to typical hardscaping materials like brick or stone or steel edging to create definition between lawn and beds, helping to keep flowers and grass in their proper places. Border plantings fulfill the same role but with a softer, more natural look, and act as sidewalk edging plants or yard border plants as well.

July 28, 2024 - Their compact growth habit makes them perfect for defining garden edges and creating neat, colorful borders. Additionally, begonias are relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning and deadheading to keep them looking their best. That said, be careful where you grow begonias because the harsh midday sun can scorch their leaves. These plants also prefer slightly acidic to neutral soils with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0.

December 3, 2024 - Don't forget to plant around the base of your climbers, to avoid too much bare soil on show. Mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus) is adept at growing in small crevices and cracks, so a narrow border is just the spot for it. It's a good self-seeder so will gradually spread. Looks great combined with campanulas, ballota, rosemary and eryngiums. Discover some of the best self-seeding plants.

Foliage Borders & Edging Plants - Hello Hello Plants & Garden Supplies
Unlike traditional border plants that rely on colourful blooms, foliage-focused plants provide year-round interest, even when not in flower. Foliage and non-flowering borders and edging are particularly useful in Melbourne and Victorian gardens to provide structure and definition to garden beds, and usually require minimal maintenance.

October 11, 2024 -

Hi friends, I’m working on getting my garden set up for the spring. I’ve got some seriously aggressive grass/groundcovers that kicked my butt last year. I’ve had cardboard and mulch down since September and I’ve been clearing grass/weeds that are trying to creep under the edges. I’m thinking of doing a semi-buried rock/urbanite/brick edging, and then planting something around the outside of that border for an extra layer of grass barrier. Any recommendations for something that might be sturdy enough to keep the grass at bay but not so aggressive I’m fighting it instead of the grass?

37 Low Growing Perennial Plants For Garden Edges & Borders
April 25, 2025 - The flowers are large, too, measuring 5 inches long, making them a striking option for borders and edging. This reliable perennial is a favorite with gardeners because it is super easy to grow and avoided by rabbits, deer, and other hungry beasties. This Autumn Crocus likes averagely moist, well-drained soils and full to partial sun to thrive. The whole plant is poisonous, so you must take care when handling the plant. Barrenwort thrives best in partial sun making it perfect for some of the shadier spots in your yard.

The best edging plants will both define and soften garden borders
August 12, 2024 - Jesus’ blankets, bunnies’ ears, lambs lugs, whatever you call it, this plant will delight small children but can make a serious design statement too. The silver-grey foliage arranged in loose rosettes sets off a white border with aplomb and peaks in early summer when the mauve-pink flower spikes are a bonus. It is best cut back to near ground level after flowering or it will become untidy.
