I am converting my wood fireplace to gas and am looking for the best natural gas insert. Reliability, efficiency, and heating are the qualities I am looking for.
The house is a two story cape cod and has about 1,000 sq ft on the first level with an open floor plan and two bedrooms. I am looking for something that will heat the first level. The house also has oil heat which is getting expensive.
I am lucky enough to have several makes to choose from. I believe the size is 30”
Heat & Glo
Enviro
Quadra-Fire
Jotul
Mendota
Pacific Energy
Regency
And I am sure even more.
What would you choose and what would you stay away from?
There are just SO many brands out there and very little explanation for why the prices vary so much. I'm hoping you guys can recommend something.
I am flexible on the dimensions of the fireplace, but the hearth and the "stone" wall are 9 feet wide and 20 feet tall. I need something grand, and understand this will probably cost $5k to $10k or more. That's fine, I'll spend whatever it takes for something really nice. I just don't want to cross the line into spending stupid money.
The only detail for consideration is that the room its going into is two stories tall, so there's no value in heat generation. It'll just flood the upper floor and those in front of the fire probably won't even get most of the heat.
I recently saw some flame-in-log models that looked neat. Not sure how much extra I would pay for that though. I also saw a brand that didn't require any glass on the front, and that was a plus, but the fireplaces were too small.
What brands/models should I be looking at? There are three fireplace dealers in the area, all well regarded, and cover every brand you can imagine and even some you've never heard of.
