The theater you mentioned you used to go to is still operating at Montgomery mall, it was just bought by AMC. There are no waiters or anything there, the assigned-seating old rocker-style chairs have been replaced by recliners and there are now digital kiosks to order concessions but that’s pretty much the only differences. I saw Sinners there in their Prime theater and feel like it’s comparable to the Dolby theater at Tysons or the IMAX theater at Rio but the experience was better than both because neither of the later theaters have recliners (all the other screens at Rio do except for the IMAX incidentally). Different theaters for different experiences AMC CityWalk for IMAX and Dolby mainstream releases and also the worst parking Chinese for really gigantic screen Egyptian / Aero / Los Feliz 3 for American Cinematheque programming El Capitan for Disney and Fox films and also the prettiest interior and the pre show organist New Beverly and Vista for a combo of excellent curation, the best popcorn and hot dogs and sodas in town. Regal is my only option as it’s the only one within a reasonable driving distance from me. I’ve only went to a nicer AMC theater that’s more out of the way a few times, for big event movies like Endgame More on reddit.com

Long story short, the last two movies I went to at AMC Dublin had less than stellar viewing experiences. Black Panther 2 was overly dark and Banshees of Irishirin was blurry. According to an article at Vulture, this is a pretty common experience across movie theaters now because the bulbs for the projectors are getting outdated and need to be replaced. I’m trying to see Avatar 2 before the Oscars and don’t want to watch a movie so focused on visuals on a less than subpar screen. It’s kind of a sad state of affairs when the home viewing experience is better than going to the theater.
