Supplements to help manage hypothyroidism
Not really anything that directly affects the thyroid. Did you do any test for vitamins and minerals? Specifically iron/ferritin vitamins D, B? We are often deficient in them and they have very similar symptoms and will make your symptoms worse. More on reddit.com
what vitamins do you take and why?
I'm taking vitamin D, a vitamin B complex (which includes b12 and vit c), selenium and magnesium. Selenium is good for thyroid health. Magnesium is good for the nervous system, bone health and heart health. None of them interfere with levothyroxine, and yes its safe to take them daily if you don't exceed the recommended daily limit. One thing to mention: if you take a supplement with biotin in it (most B complexes have biotin in) it can mess up your thyroid blood tests and make them inaccurate. Don't take it for a week before having a blood test. More on reddit.com

Are there any vitamins I should avoid if I have hypothyroidism?
There are no vitamins you should avoid if you have hypothyroidism. But if your hypothyroidism is treated with levothyroxine, you should avoid taking certain vitamins around the same time as your medicine. That’s because these vitamins can interfere with how your body absorbs levothyroxine. Vitamins that lower the absorption of levothyroxine include calcium, aluminum, iron, and magnesium.

What foods or drinks should I avoid with hypothyroidism?
You don’t need to avoid specific drinks or foods if you have hypothyroidism. Some people believe you should avoid certain foods — known as goitrogens — because they can affect your thyroid levels if you’re low in iodine. These foods include lima beans, sweet potatoes, and cruciferous vegetables . But iodine deficiency is very rare in the U.S. So most people don’t need to avoid eating these foods.

June 7, 2024 - Ginseng: A 2018 systematic review of 10 studies found that ginseng improved fatigue, a symptom often associated with thyroid dysfunction 23. Rhodiola: A 2009 randomized controlled trial found that rhodiola improved stress-related symptoms and thinking ability 24. For my hypothyroid clients with lingering fatigue, I might recommend adrenal support for 2–3 weeks. If they don’t have noticeable improvements in energy, mood, and sleep, then they probably don’t need adrenal support. The effect of hydrochloric acid supplements like betaine HCl isn’t well documented, but I find that some clients do find hydrochloric acid really helpful for underactive thyroid issues.

March 20, 2025 - Magnesium is required for the conversion of T4 into T3 so this mineral should be supplemented. Some people may lose magnesium at a great rate through urination. Also, it seems that a diet high in refined food and caffeine will encourage magnesium loss. ... Selenium is a crucial component of the enzyme that converts T4 to T3 in the body. Without it, T3 cannot be produced in the right amounts, and organs will function as if they were hypothyroid even though blood test levels are normal.
