I think a lot was revealed about his character when he said his first (movie) line: “My parents don’t even know I left.” Boq has probably spent his whole life being ignored or overlooked. Now he’s off to college thinking everything is going to change for the better. He has high hopes and high expectations—but unfortunately they’re TOO high. Very quickly he becomes incapable of accepting reality and acts for the purpose of shielding himself from emotional harm (most notably by lying to Nessa at the Ozdust). Everything about him makes me cringe. Part of me wants to feel bad for him because he just wants love, but he’s truly insufferable. He can’t bring himself to understand that Glinda is unavailable and that’s super icky. I like to imagine that after the Ozdust he went to his dorm, turned Mr. Brightside on blast, and cried himself to sleep. More on reddit.com
