July 21, 2025 - The "Acoustic Wave Music System II" was released in 2006 and added MP3 CD playback, a "Boselink" port and a headphone jack. This system was judged to be expensive and lacking in performance and features compared to its competitors. The line of Acoustic Wave Music System products was discontinued in 2017. The "Wave Radio" (which has since become known as "Wave Radio I") was an AM/FM clock radio that was introduced in 1993. It was smaller than the Acoustic Wave Music System and used two 2.5-inch speakers. A "Wave Radio/CD" model was introduced in 1998 and was essentially a Wave Radio I with a CD player.

New vs old Wave Radios.
The big change was about 2004 when the Wave Music System was introduced. They’re easily identified because they don’t have buttons on the top like their predecessors. They are a huge improvement. Up to this point only one of the speakers has a 28” WaveGuide on it. After the redesign both speakers have a 30” WaveGuide and they’re both tapered to avoid a prominent resonant frequency. They’re louder, clearer and can reach a lower note. Since then there have only been small software based changes, no hardware changes. More on reddit.com

Hi. As far as I know, Bose doesn’t use mode numbers on products, only on boxes that went to Bose stores or to retailers. Yours is a Wave Music System with the wireless logo, so I believe that means it can take the sound link hookup to add it to a network for Wi-Fi play through the Bose SoundTouch network. However, you can always take the serial number to the Bose website to get any and all information on the unit you have. More on reddit.com

It was an early model in the Solo ... current model is closest to equivalent; but it cost around $300 when we bought it. It has Bluetooth audio capability and I can stream music to it from my Android smartphone. I hardly ever use it for that--I do 98% of my listening with headphones, and most of the rest over my computer's speakers. And my hearing is going. So I can't tell you a lot about it. I consider the sound to be "pretty decent" and vaguely similar to my wife's mom's Bose wave radio... More on bogleheads.org

September 4, 2010 - So yeh, any info on the comparison of top loading Bose and the slot loading Bose would be great! Thanks, Paul · Click to expand... I just bought the original Radio/CD player (used) as newer models were too expensive even used. The speakers are different than in the Model II as the left one reproduces the full audio spectrum (as best it can) while the right one is just a midrange/tweeter. The electronics merge the bass (below 200 Hz) from both channels and directs it ALL to the left speaker and through it's Waveguide.

May 10, 2021 -
So I’ve been buying old Wave radios on the cheap and am extremely happy with the sound these 30 year old units make. I have one in our kitchen and a second at work both awr1-1w’s. I’m considering buying a newer version like a II or IV. Never having heard one I’m wondering if for the additional cost do the newer ones sound any better or get any louder than old ones or are they pretty similar. Thanks

How can I tell the manufacture date of my newer Wave Radio? I just got it from a garage sale for $75 and it's white. I see light colored things better than darker colors. My original one was black with a CD player and Pedestal that I got for $20 from a charity Thrift Store. It worked perfectly. (Gooooooooooal!) 2) What is the point to using a Pedestal? My old one had one, but my new one doesn't. Do I need it? Ol' Whitey works perfectly now, AFAIKT. Thanks. Randy
