r/EatCheapAndHealthy on Reddit: How Healthy is Canned Fruit?
May 17, 2019 -
Hello all,
Quick question regarding the nutritional information of canned fruit. I usually have fruit for lunch and was considering buying canned fruit to be more efficient when preparing lunches for the week (I prepare everything on Sunday.) However, all of these canned fruits I see on the shelf come in “light/heavy syrup” and seem to have 10-15+ grams of sugar per can. With this, how concerned should I be of canned fruit? Is the sugar amount the same or worse than buying fresh fruit? Let me know any/all information I should know regarding this. All input is welcome!!

In terms of nutritional value, fresh or flash frozen fruit will always be superior to any canned fruit. Now, if your main concern is shelf life, there is utility in buying canned fruit. If your plan is to just pop open the can and eat, then always choose fruit or fruit cocktails packed in water. Any sort of canned or pasteurized fruit tends to lose it's natural flavor profile during the process, and that flavor profile has to be added back in the process via artificial means, which is why a lot of those products tend to be packed with sugars. Just stay away from canned fruit packed in syrups and you'll be OK, those products are more for baking and are meant to be super sweet for that purpose.

Canned Fruit Cocktail: The Best Canned Fruit Salad, Ranked
March 13, 2025 - This canned fruit salad is low sugar, but it’s still plenty sweet because it contains some artificial sweeteners. It doesn’t have a gross aftertaste, though. In fact, it’s pretty mildly sweet for an artificially sweetened product (the sweeteners in question are sucralose and acesulfame potassium, in case you were wondering), which makes it the best fruit cocktail we tried that was reduced sugar or no sugar added.
