Canon R5: A Longer Term Analysis After 6 Months in the Field | Fstoppers
September 14, 2022 - Really enjoyed your review, thank you! I’ve been recording unlimited 8K with the R5 and the V+ since the 1.4 firmware came out. Recording to a Mini 2tb. Recorded well over an hour and the V+, fan stayed normal. Once the SSD got hot, and what card wouldn’t after recording over an hour, the fan went up a notch and the SSD cooled down. IMO both companies did a great job on this. Like to see a full 2.1 HDMI port added in the future to Canon cameras to enable 4K 120fps recording to the v+.

R5 Review
The R5 is a truly amazing camera. What impresses me most is the image stabilization when the body is paired with an RF lens. I have been able to shoot at slow shutter speeds handheld that I would have never thought possible without a tripod. For landscape photography, this is a huge plus! I... More on rfshooters.com
DPReview TV: Canon EOS R5 Review
I'm looking to upgrade from my Canon 7D which I've had for 10 years now (that makes me feel old) and I think I'm leaning towards Sony. The R5 is too expensive for me and I wish the R6 was a little higher in resolution. But the biggest knock for me is the cost of RF lenses. That's some expensive glass, at least here in NZ. Makes some of the expensive Sony glass look reasonable. I was thinking of going for an A7III but might wait and see if an A7IV comes out later this year. I just want better dynamic range and slightly better resolution. More on reddit.com
Canon R5 Mark II - Comprehensive Review
Thanks for the very thorough review. Appreciate the effort. Trust is everything with a camera body. More on reddit.com
Should I buy the Canon R5 or the R6 Mark II?
If resolution matters (for cropping, large prints, or commercial work), the R5's 45MP sensor has a clear advantage over the R6 Mark II's 24.2MP. If you prioritise burst speed and do not need extra resolution, the R6 Mark II offers 40fps and costs less. Both have excellent autofocus.

Canon EOS R5 Review 2026: A Travel Photographer's Honest Take
What is the difference between the Canon R5 and R5 Mark II?
The R5 Mark II has a new stacked sensor enabling 30fps burst shooting (vs 20fps), pre-capture capability, eye control autofocus, and improved 8K video at 60fps. Image quality and resolution are comparable at 45MP. The Mark II costs roughly $1,700 more than the original at current prices.

Is the Canon EOS R5 discontinued?
Yes, Canon officially discontinued the original EOS R5 in early 2026, replacing it with the R5 Mark II. However, the R5 is still widely available from retailers and on the used market at reduced prices, and Canon will continue to service and repair the R5 well into the 2030s.

As Nasim noted in his review of the Canon EOS R6, Canon’s entry into the mirrorless market three years ago was not the most exciting moment for Canon shooters. By comparison, Canon made a big splash when they released the R5 and R6 in 2020.

I bought mine about six months after the introduction. Fantastic camera.. I bought it because my prior camera (Canon 5DM3) could no longer keep up with me and needed faster fps. I use mine primarily underwater. This photo was my first ocean shoot with it a couple months later. Years later, there is no camera (even the R5M2) that is a worthy upgrade from my current R5.

March 14, 2022 - However, this video from the excellent Chris Niccolls at DP Review describes that the weather sealing on the R5 is equivalent to the Canon EOS 5D IV. Now that is good. The 5D IV should represent the gold standard. I have friends who are landscape photographers who stand out in all weathers with their trusty 5D IV.

May 20, 2025 - The EOS R5 doesn’t have many quirks. Saying that, with the screen sensitive to light touches, it’s easy to inadvertently fire the shutter with touch shutter enabled. This became frustrating to the point I ended up disabling it. Reviewing and inspecting images at high magnification also needs the switch dial setting enabled in order to intuitively control the magnify/index view from the front top plate dial. I’m surprised Canon didn’t chose to have this set to enabled out of the box.

If you’re looking for a review that leans heavily into stats/white sheet spec etc – then you can look elsewhere. For me, I jump in head-first with using equipment in real-life scenarios where I’ve been hired as a professional to do my job, and see if the gear can keep up. Unless otherwise stated – all photos in this post were made with the Canon R5 ... After shooting 17,457 images with the Canon R5 Mark II, I’ve decided to return it due to several small trade-offs and bugs that impacted my workflow. While I appreciated its classic Canon design, impressive build quality, solid flip-out screen,
