The Base ISO of CLOG3 is at 800, going beneath it and you visually loose dynamic range on the histogram. Depending on the Situation, overexposing 1-2 stops works fine. Answer from Alternative-Pea-8190 on reddit.com

r/videography on Reddit: Looking for Color Grading Advice (C-Log3): canon r6 mark ii
May 8, 2025 -

I shoot with a Canon R6 Mark II and record in C-Log3. I’ve tried Canon’s official LUTs and experimented with different color spaces like Rec.709, Rec.2020, and Cinema Gamut.

Most of my footage is of animals such as; deer, bears, dogs, ducks, geese, bobcats, etc. all shot in 4K. These videos are just for fun, and I like to share some of them on Instagram Reels and TikTok.

That said, I’ve been struggling to get a good color grade. The few clips I’ve managed to shoot and grade just feel off, colors look strange or flat, and I can’t seem to get that vibrant, natural look. For those working with Canon C-Log3:

  • Do you rely on Canon’s LUTs or use custom ones?

  • Do you manually convert to Rec.709 or use a LUT as a base?

  • What color space and gamma settings do you find give the best results?

  • Any tips for making colors pop in a realistic way?

Would really appreciate any advice or shared experiences. Thanks in advance!

r/canon on Reddit: Canon R6 - Some noob questions about shooting log footage
September 11, 2023 -

Hi all,

I am getting more into the video side of things (mainly a portrait photog) and am having a little bit of an uphill battle learning to work with log.

I have a first gen R6 which can shoot in Clog (709, 2020) and Clog 3 (709, 2020 and Cinema Gamut).

I am finally feeling comfortable on the grading side of things (using DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.5) but am a little confused about exposing properly, esp at night time in low light settings.

Here is what I have gathered to far:

Native ISO for Clog is 400

Native ISO for Clog3 is 800

Coming from the photo side of things I thought that I can bump up the ISO to get the right exposure but this has lead to a lot of noise in the footage.

I am now understanding that for video we must stick to the base ISO…is this correct?

Some videos I have watched mentioning going in multiples of 800…so 800. 1600. 3200.

I think we’re supposed to overexpose log by 1.5 stops but if that isn’t possible due to certain lighting conditions, how can I get the best (min noise) end product?

I have tried denoising in DR and it takes away from the sharpness quite a bit.

Topaz AI Video denoiser does a decent job but takes some of the saturation away from the reds.

However, I want to make sure I can getting everything right in camera so I do minimal denoising later.

Currently here is my workflow

Import into DR > add to timeline > color space transform onto node to move from clog3 cinema gamut to rec 709 and cineon for the first phase > second node, add Kodak LUT from the “film looks” luts.

I am FAR from an expert on this sort of thing, however I have a bit of experience in shooting video in Clog 3 on an R5. I learned a ton from this video from Tyler Stalman , where the biggest thing was learning to do the color grading before the LUT as it affords a far greater dynamic range (6:20 specifically). I do everything in Clog 3, ISO800, and then use ND filters to get the correct shutter speed. Video editing is definitely fun, but also far more time consuming than photo editing.

I think we’re supposed to overexpose log by 1.5 stops ETTR is often messed up. Cullen Kelly has a good video on it here https://youtu.be/aB8ku9ET-dw?si=cN6BMHyDiC6ICkJG If you are going from iso 1000 to iso 2000 to ETTR, you are doing it won't. I am now understanding that for video we must stick to the base ISO…is this correct? No. Will a ISO 800 image have less noise than one shot with half the light at iso 1600, yes. But if you don't have a means to double the light on your subject (or faster lens) then ISO 1600 is going to be your only option. Import into DR > add to timeline > color space transform onto node to move from clog3 cinema gamut to rec 709 and cineon for the first phase > second node, add Kodak LUT from the “film looks” luts. I will ask where you are making your grade at. If it is in the rec709 nodes, this could be causing you problems. I would recommend using the automatic color management added in V17 to grade in DWG. You can grade on the clog side of your first CST. But having a common working space for all cameras is desirable. Cullen has also converted the Kodak and Fuji LUTs to DWG to eliminate the cineon faff I have the R5 (never shot an R6), many people complain about it being noisy, but I haven't seen it. This video is at obviously quite dark and even has slow motion. I think it worked well https://youtu.be/OhA6X-o8KXE?si=bVS94nFq_HGU-Ba0 Iso 12800 is going to be noisy, no doubt. But if you can't get a good image at 1600-3200, I think you have a workflow problem.

October 5, 2024 -

Hey Canon clog users. My name is Alex and I am looking for a help on color grading my Clog footage from my R6 mark II. I saw this youtube video from a guy and its was one of my favorite grade on the internet for this camera. Punchy colors, great skin tones. Is anyone here know where I can buy this kind of luts? I believe its without conversation to rec709, probably on layer drag and drop and some basic adjustments. Before judging me, I am adjusting my WB correctly, I am exposing correctly, I tried million different ways and expensive luts but I cannot get 10% near his grade and punchy colors. Thanks in advance.

I'm used to shooting CLOG on the EOS R, at ISO400 and exposing one stop over but I've just bought a EOS R6ii for a second body so I'm not sure what the optimum settings are?

Is it ISO800 and still expose one stop over?

Any help would be much appreciated before I completely mess up my next shoot haha!

r/canon on Reddit: Does the R6 iii let you chose your base ISO when shooting Clog3?
January 26, 2026 -

Hello, I can't seem to find this setting in Canon's camera manual and I don't have a camera to try it on. I'm wondering if I would be able to shoot at 800 ISO but with 3200 ISO set as the base ISO. I've heard the R6 iii has dual native ISO in Clog3 at 800 and 3200, but I'm not sure if you can choose which base to use independently of the ISO you're shooting in.

I'm considering buying the R6 iii and I was watching this youtube video that explains the benefit of choosing the base ISO for dynamic range. Seek to 4:53 to for the explanation.

I'm not sure if this is only a feature available on dedicated cinema cameras.

r/CanonR6 on Reddit: Canon R6 / R6 Mark II – Color Grading and Lens Advice (videography)
May 8, 2025 -

Hi everyone,

I’m shooting with a Canon R6 Mark II and recording in C-Log3. I’ve been experimenting more with video since upgrading from my previous camera. I mainly film animals. cats, ducks, dogs, geese, etc.—in 4K, and I share some clips just for fun on Instagram Reels and TikTok.

I’ve tried Canon’s LUTs and played around with Rec.709, Rec.2020, and Cinema Gamut, but my footage still feels off. The color often looks flat or unnatural, or very overly saturated on like brown orange fur. and I haven’t been able to get a clean or vibrant grade I’m happy with.

I’m also using the Canon 50mm f/1.8, which I love for photos, but I’m finding the lack of stabilization makes handheld video a bit shaky, even with IBIS. I’m curious what lenses others are using for handheld wildlife video.

If you're shooting on the R6 or R6 Mark II:

  • Can you share any sample videos? I'd love to see what’s possible.

  • What lenses do you use?

  • Do you shoot in Log or another profile?

  • Do you use Canon LUTs, custom LUTs, or grade manually?

  • What color space and gamma settings give you the best results?

  • Any tips for making the colors look natural but still stand out?

Thanks for any advice or examples, really appreciate it.

r/canon on Reddit: Long time users. How's the r6 mark ii treating you?
January 28, 2024 -

It has been some time since its release and it is just difficult to trust these youtube reviewers these days vs every day professionals. They give great details about the product but only using it for what, few weeks maybe? I would love to hear some long time reviews.

I do photo and video work. I feel it could handle just about anything but I am curious with the day to day use. I am not currently using Canon but I am just unhappy with my current system and I am just ready to be out of it at whatever costs. I have used and edited Sonys before but it has been a long time since I have had experience with the Canon system and I am curious if this could be a great option to consider.

- How do you find the footage edits being IPB codec? If needing to make proxies, it isn't a deal breaker but would nice for short personal projects if it isn't 100% necessary.
- Also with the codec, do you find that the shadows get muddy similar to what is seen with the sony a7iv codecs? Typically in less than desirable lighting conditions.
- I have read that 60p frame skips/choppy. This true? Remedies if so?
- Does it have manual focus video peaking? I couldn't find clarity on this for some reason. Which I have a monitor that does that I will be using but sometimes going raw camera only is nice for certain tight situations.
- When using autofocus, do you find the RF to EF adapter is less reliable than native in a big way?
- How does CLOG3 grade with the codec? Can it stretch well without breaking?

Currently I have my sights set on the R6ii and the a7iv. Both great cameras obviously but not having cropped 60p would be a very welcomed feature.

For photography I have no concerns, I was happy with the 80d and 6d back in the day so I am sure they have greatly improved since then.

I'm using R6 for 3 years and R6ii for 1 year now. I'm using both for professional video use. Answering your questions: Canon Log video is HEVC 4:2:2 10-bit. This means no Nvidia or AMD graphics cards have hardware acceleration for this video codec (only latest Intel graphics and Apple M1 or newer). If you have a stronger CPU, you can edit without proxies. Otherwise, it's required to have proxies. I don't have to use proxies for simple projects. If you underexpose Clog-3, your shadows will be just grey areas of noise. Use the histogram and assess the ideal exposure. On most shots, I tend to overexpose by one or two stops if require more details in shadows. One thing I miss on the R6ii is the lack of Clog-1. If I can't plan what shots are going to be in slow motion I prefer to shoot everything in 50/60fps with 360° shutter and deliver great looking full speed footage and a bit blurrier slow-mo. I rarely use Focus peaking while manually focusing but it's alright, I guess. EF adapter is great. Lightning fast focus on EF 16-35L ii, 24-70L ii, 70-200L ii. I wouldn't say RF lenses are any faster, though the majority RF lenses I work with are non L fixed lenses which all have slow AF, and the bulky 28-70L F/2.0, which has fast autofocus. I love how the end result looks when an experienced colorist does the final grade. Overexposed footage is way cleaner, but pushing it too far does harm as well (clipping aside). You can also just apply the official Canon LUT, tweak the curves little, and it looks pretty good on its own.

I've been shooting with Canon cameras for almost 20 years (time flies) and owned the original Rebel, 20D, 30D, up to the 1D IIN and 1D III and eventually the 5D IV. The 5D IV image was spectacular. I eventually got the R and it was a slight step back from the 5D IV for IQ (Slightly noisier). But got the R6 II when it came out and it's the best camera I've ever owned for both image quality and autofocus... as well as for video. I shoot hockey in low lit arenas and it never misses focus and ISO 6400 is ridiculously clean - better than any camera I've used. Dynamic range is also better than any camera I've used. I can pull up shadows unlike any camera. I thought the 5D IV was great but this is better. And the files are actually sharper so even though it's a few MP less, I can print any size with amazing results (then again I've printed 8MP files on billboards that looked amazing). I can shoot 12,800 images now that are about as clean as ISO 1600 on 1D and 20/30D cams. With that said, I only shoot with the mechanical/first curtain shutter. I never use electronic because image quality always takes a hit (even on the new R5 II). And as a sports photographer for 12 years using the 10 fps on the 1D III which was blazing fast, 12 fps is more than enough. I never miss a shot and culling even 12 fps bursts is already a pain, I can't imagine 40 fps. For video the 60 fps on the R6 II has been the best on the market since it was released, tied with the R3. It's full frame oversampled, something the A7IV, S5 II can't say as they are cropped. The new z6 III is the only other cam in the price range I think to have that and it just came out. Even the new R5 II has worse 4k60 than the R6 II as it is line skipped and very soft (like the original R5). I shoot mostly in 4k60 so this cam is great. The two things I would have liked is for them to keep Clog 1 as an option...unsure why they removed that. Also, 4k120 would be so nice, even if it was cropped like the z6III (I know that mode is very noisy on the z6III though).

Canon R5 MII - How to change Color Space in Canon Log 3 to BT. 709?

Canon R5 Mark II and R6 Mark II user here. I have the camera set to film. Mode to manual. In Menu Color/tone/Dynamicrange I enable Custom picture. I select C8 for example. I select Edit CP file. Go to Gamma /Color Space to select C.LOG 3/C.Gamut. And how do I change C.Gamut to BT.709. See second photo.

First photo shows how to change the setting in the menu of the Canon R6 MII.

Can't find it in the menu, is it hidden somewhere? Tried the info button or looking glass inside this submenu, but there isn't even an option to select a different Color Space.

Have mailed this to Canon too, but they aren't very responsive.
