March 29, 2024Nikon Z8 vs Canon R5 / R5 Mark II – which body is more rugged for harsh conditions?
Well, your mileage may vary, but I've had my Z9's in the jungles of Ecuador and Costa Rica, altitudes over 10,000 ft, below sea level (not underwater though!), subzero snowy/icy conditions in northern Minnesota and Alaska, dusty dry deserts in southern Utah and Arizona, and everywhere in between. On my original Z9 I have probably 350,000+ actuations. I generally just have it thrown in my camera bag with a bunch of lenses, not really even all padded and blocked off. Been on tons of airplanes and off-road trips. It has fallen a couple of times from a tripod at 6'. And honestly, it's still pretty much just like brand new. With no mirror or mechanical shutter, and with the sensor cover, I'm pretty confident in most situations. I've definitely needed to clean the sensor off a couple of times, but that's about it. I'm assuming the Z8 is just a smaller version of the same. More on reddit.com

One thing, though: for tracking sports or things where depth of field is more than a few millimeters, the Z8 is incredible...it can track action with the best of them...it's that super fine precision in very shallow DOF situations with eye AF where the two differ.

Hey everyone,
I’m looking for a full-frame mirrorless camera that can handle serious outdoor abuse — multi-day treks off the grid, rough handling, cold, humidity, sand, dust, no backups, no babying.
Right now I’m torn between the Nikon Z8 and the Canon R5 / R5 Mark II. What I really care about is ruggedness and reliability — I already lean toward Nikon because of the lenses, but I need to know:
Is the Z8 body truly durable? What’s the mix of plastic vs metal, and how solid is the build compared to the R5/R5 II?
How do the weather sealing and resistance to extreme elements (rain, cold, dust, sand) compare?
Has anyone used these bodies in rough, remote environments — any weak points or failure stories?
I’m not too worried about specs or autofocus at this point — just which camera is more likely to survive a week in the wild without a padded case or gentle treatment.
Would love to hear real-world experiences or teardown insights. Thanks!

You ask in a Nikon sub reddit so there is an expected bias. Just saying. I work in a camera store that handles these options frequently. I would go Z8. (I primarily shoot film so I have no personal skin in the game - wouldn't buy a digital camera in that price bracket myself). Neither of your choices comes back for repairs - so both are robust. I just think Nikon is a better camera/lens builder. Less focus on specs, more on relevant function.

The z8 is more rugged in general due to the lack of a mechanical shutter and a shutter shield. So less points of failure and more robust sensor protection. Plus rated for a large temperature range. R5 is robust. I have seen 1 body that has a shutter count of 800k and still going. So tldr both are fair rugged, way more than sony. Man the horror stories I heard and seen.
