r/Staples on Reddit: Any tips for printing Canva business cards?
August 21, 2024 -

Hey all,

Totally new to this printing stuff, making some business cards and wanted to see if you all have any tips so that they come out in good quality.

I had one concern with the printing platform before because when I created the card on Canva everything was within the bleed lines, but then the next page when I clicked publish came up with a "danger zone" and wanted me to move things inside more. I went into the store and she wasn't too sure what I meant but said if it's within the bleed it's fine. Not sure if this is true?

Is it better to create it and screenshot it as an image and take it in?

Is there any paper you'd recommend that turns out best?

Appreciate any thoughts!

Thanks

Realistically, Canva is a bit crap for creating business cards. As an employee there was always an internal cringe when someone brought in a design from that site. As you've found out the program leaves out any mention of bleed, which is the extra part of the paper that is cut off to ensure you get color all the way to the edge of the card. For our system you need a half inch extra space all the way around the boarder to not only account for the bleed itself, but to make sure that your text and images are not close to the edge. The machines we use always have a little bit of variation in each cut, so if your to close, some of your cards may be ok, some may not. Measurements wise, you want all your important parts of the card, your info/images to be contained in an area 1.75 x 3.25. inches. However, the actual size of the image itself should be 2.25 x 3.75. If your familiar at all with photoshop, this would be the difference between your 'image' and your 'canvas' Don't use a screenshot, your quality is going to go down, and make sure you upload the file as either a jpg or pdf, png files tend to raster like crazy, again, leaving you with a low quality image. Paper wise, upgrade to the premium matte called cougar. Its a thicker card and has a actual matte finish, meaning that people will be able to write on it if needed, the other papers have a coating on them and most pens will smear.

After creating the file go to Staples.com/printandmarketingservices That's where we make all our business cards, once you choose how you want it it will take you to a builder, upload your file and place it in there. Once there you can see any issues with your card and readjust the file from there. Also, keep the file. Most of the time our system will delete the file after it's used so if you want more business cards keep it.
