Once upon a time I used an online service that was not cAI. I got frustrated with limitations (it's difficult to fully roleplay if you don't control the model 100%). Since that platform, which was quite good, I never used any platform whatsoever. All of them are limited one way or another. Answer from Ok-Aide-3120 on reddit.com

r/CharacterAIrunaways on Reddit: Had to leave c.ai subreddit
December 4, 2024 -

The user base of the C.ai subreddit is so clearly made up of people 13-17 y/o, which has started to get annoying. The posts there are so immature sometimes!

There's such a clear distinction between the J.ai and C.ai subreddit. And I don't even use J.ai THAT often, but I can appreciate that their user base is more tolerable most of the time.

The latest trend is everyone posting about 'abusive' bots, calling people who use them 'gooners' and worse. I am thankful this harassment is limited to the subreddit and there is no message/comment feature in-app.

Listen— if you dislike something, that is understandable. I typically don't engage with bots that have DD:DE themes, just because I make up my own dead-dovey plots with my own characters.

But a large segment of that subreddit is so self-righteous and holier-than-thou and it reeks of when I was in middle school and had a purity complex, lol.

& it's like: no, I am not trying to start a fight with a minor on the internet. (Though I'm not that much older, only 21.) But when I was a minor, I wasn't posting about my opinions and thinkpieces and call-outs about other peoples' content and why they need to be 'cancelled'. I was roleplaying on Amino or something.

"You're normalizing abuse." Go on AO3 for more than three seconds under any tag other than 'fluff'. I dare you. Not everyone wants to RP happy scenarios and that's fine. Oftentimes it's just a way of processing trauma. To say that anyone who enjoys nuanced dark media is 'normalizing abuse' is insaneeeee.

You watch shows with dark themes, yes? You read books with dark themes, yes? I would hope so. Otherwise you are actively avoiding over 90% of literature for the sake of not 'normalizing' bad behavior or whatever you think is happening.

The word normalize is so irritating at this point.

Live and let live. People on the Internet will do what they like anyway. You will be happier for it! I try not to be the grumpy 20 something but that last post got under my skin, I'm sorry. 😭 Sometimes I wish there was a subreddit for C.ai users who are adults.

November 20, 2022 - Huge community, thousands of user-made characters. Image gen is good (consistent but not always top-tier quality), roleplay holds up well with strong consistency and easy customization. Uncensored, voice options available. Still a classic for a reason, even if it's been criticized lately. Feels closest to old-school C.ai in style, massive community-driven character library, decent memory (not elite but okay), good roleplay.

r/CharacterAIrunaways on Reddit: Building new AI roleplay chat app with character level progression. What do you need?
October 16, 2025 -

Hi everyone

I tried a couple of AI roleplay apps like character ai and all of them had the same issue where the conversations become stale or repetitive after a while. They keep repeating the same things and are unable to break out of the loop without me guiding them every few messages. So to try to solve this, I build my own roleplay app called taleshub.app

Why is it different (and doesn't go stale)?

  • I have added a third character called Narrator and basic story-level progressions.

  • Narrator objectives:

    • Change the scene - day to night, office to cafe etc.

    • Spawn NPC and talk on their behalf to carry the conversation forward.

    • Break stale/repetitive messages loop by adding unexpected scenarios.

  • Story level progression:

    • You start with a main character system prompt

    • As you complete tasks and story progress, additional prompt are added to the character for that story level.

    • This keeps the story moving forward and characters grow and think about you differently than what you started with.

Core strengths:

  • Long term memory

  • Uncensored mode

  • Story/character progression

  • No ads

  • Narrator for deeper and interesting scenes

  • User response suggestions

taleshub.app is in free beta with 100 free daily credits. If you want to increase the limit and give us detailed feedback, just DM me your email.

I have been getting some feedback from the reddit community and have been doing fast changes to the website.

Anyways, what else do you need? We would love your feedback :). Thanks again!

There are a lot of junk alternatives recommended all over reddit. I'll spare you the junk recommendations. So I will go directly to the alternatives to character ai that meet the following requirements Be totally free or at least have the option to accumulate points that you can spend on the site in exchange for tokens. Their models are better than the character ai model. Be easily accessible, without having to download anything or watch a 20 minute programming tutorial. That said, here are the recommendations. Character Tavern (Wide variety of models. Constantly updated. It is totally free and they almost always add very good models every month). Link: https://character-tavern.com FictionLab AI (Simple interface. A decent model. Totally free). Link: https://fictionlab.ai Rubii AI (It is the only alternative that allows you to use the latest Google model, Gemini 2.5, for free. For those who don't know, Gemini 2.5 is the best model for RPG role-playing, none compares to it). Link: https://rubii.ai CharSnap AI (Similar to FictionLab, it has a very good interface and several halfway decent models). Link: https://charsnap.ai These are, for the moment, the only alternatives on the market that meet the above requirements. They are free or partially free, they are easy to use, and above all, their roleplay language model is much better than that of Character AI. Don't mention junk like Char AI, Janitor AI etc... because everybody knows it and the quality of their language models is at a standstill in 2023.

October 9, 2025 - For quite some time now, I’ve been reading up and thinking about apps like Character.AI. These platforms let you chat with fictional characters, often from anime, games, or original creations. At first glance, it all seems pretty harmless: roleplaying, diving into interactive fiction, creating imaginary dialogues.

r/ChaiApp on Reddit: Why is Chai better than Character AI?
February 13, 2024 -

Both Chai and Character AI are great! But they are fundamentally two different businesses. All developers at Chai have only 1 mission — build things to delight their users. Nothing else matters.

What this translates to is they work very hard to improve the fundamental AI model which powers the tens of millions of the characters you folks create. They are also working on recommender systems so that each user will be able to get a model tailored to themselves.

Also, they minimize the amount of filtering done to our users. As heavy filtering violates their core principle of user delight. Their mission is to build the world’s Best Entertainment Generative AI Platform!
