r/classicalmusic on Reddit: Who first proposed the term "classical period"?
June 27, 2022 -
I was reading the book "The story of music" by Howard goodall, in which he stated that the terminology of "classical period"(1750-1820) was named by some early 20th century german musicians/critics to emphasize the legacy passed down from the first Viennese school. So it intrigued me then -- who were the first ones to name the period "classical"?

I’m pretty sure the using the term “classical” in music predates the early 20th-century. By the end of the 18th century, scholars and writers were already referring to Ancient Greek art as “Classical” art, and painters at the time (who were enthused by Ancient Greek models and examples) were being referred to as neo-Classical. Since music descriptions (including classical, baroque, romantic, impressionist, etc.) were made analogous to their corresponding styles in visual arts, it seems that it shouldn’t take until the the 20th century to start looking at music’s “classical” period and start making the association to that era’s popular visual art descriptive term. Anyone here with an OED who can confirm this?

who were the first ones to name the period "classical"? Note that the limits of the "classical period" vary according to the author. From Webster J (1991) "Haydn's 'Farewell' Symphony and the Idea of Classical Style" ISBN 0521385202, pp 350–51: [Raphael Georg] Kiesewetter's [1834] work was decisive for later historiography; he invented many of the periods and subperiods, and sloganeering style- and "school"-designations, which have persisted to this day […] […] The fateful concept of a "Vienna School" centering around Haydn and Mozart thus arose in conservative opposition to contemporary nationalistic and progressive trends. […] […] Only the term "Classical" itself was missing; indeed, it remained latent for the rest of the century. […] It was thus left to Guido Adler and his student Wilhelm Fischer, in the first two decades of [the 20th] century, to establish the term and concept "Vienna Classical School/Period," which has shaped the historiography of later eighteenth-century music ever since.

The Classical period was known as the Age of Enlightenment, or the Age of Reason. The era spanned about seventy years (1750-1820), but in its short duration, musical practices began that have influenced music ever since. Classical period music is by far the most common Western music known today.
