I would have taken the loan and flown overseas. Vernon could have gone with him. Why did Elvis stay?

If I had to guess it’d be a combination of loyalty and naiveté. The Col. got him going, got him to that superstar status. So he stayed loyal. Naiveté because Elvis was the worlds first major superstar. No other artist reached the level of stardom Elvis had prior to the 1950s. Because of that, it was an unmapped roadtrip. Nobody knew where they were going or what they were doing.

I want to notate that in real life it was closer to $2 million +, not $8 million. I believe all the numbers were padded for inflation so the audience can understand what they were dealing with. Kinda like Austin Powers where Dr. Evil wanted a million dollars and #2 is like 'it's not a lot these days'. That being said. I just think there was loyalty that Elvis had for his longtime manager and friend that he just couldn't bring himself to leave. There's also a case of working with the devil you know over the devil you don't know. Courts can also be expensive and a publicity nightmare so he may have wanted to stay out of that too. I just wish Colonel would have let Elvis go and do what he wanted to do and there wouldn't have been such a problem. Elvis didn't care that he was taking 50% of his income; both were partners and making money and Elvis was so generous he didn't care. But not getting certain roles, certain songs, going overseas...that kind of mental stagnation was really what hurt him; not the money. Elvis would have just spent what more he gained from any renegotiation of payments no matter who he was working with. But it is anxiety inducing when you think IF he had sued and even if he had lost and was forced to pay the colonel that ridiculous debt, a month's worth of shows would have done it...maybe even less. He would not have been forced to pay anything until an official settlement was made and he would have had months/years to do it. saving an account for that reason while waiting would have fixed everything and if he DIDN'T end up having to pay Parker, that money gets to go to his charity and gift giving. It really is hard to fathom the logistics to this situation. In the end, I think to really understand it, you HAVE to think of The Colonel as a 2nd parent. Put yourself in his place and imagine if this was your own mother or father or a sister and seriously be truthful to yourself and ask if you would have been able to fire them in this situation. And you have to do it in Elvis's mindset; not with the hindsight is 20/20 knowledge we all have 45-50 years after the fact.

It's a good business model. It is true that Howard Stern built an empire on the backs of those who didn't want him on the air. They would sit there and listen longer than actual fans of the show looking for things to complain about it. More on reddit.com

Thoughts on Colonel Tom Parker?
I think he’s a bully who should’ve let Elvis go on the international tour! He himself couldn’t go on tour but he could’ve sent someone else with Elvis to babysit! He trusted Elvis’ dad already, send him along to handle the business/finance stuff, they have phones so The Colonel could’ve checked in on Elvis that way! Elvis asked for ONE thing in the many years he did everything The Colonel told him to do, and he said no… that’s not right whatsoever! More on reddit.com
Had Elvis lived longer, do you think he would have ended up truly broke?
I think the simple answer is, he would still be rich today, just not as rich as he couldve been. More on reddit.com
