From my experience, whether a laptop cooling pad works depends on the design of both the pad and your laptop. Pads work best when: – Your laptop has vents on the bottom (not sides) – The cooling pad covers the full base size – The fans are high RPM and positioned under hot zones (CPU/GPU) I had a cheap $15 pad that barely moved air, then switched to a Cooler Master Notepal X3 and saw a noticeable improvement in laptop temperature. Best option is a stand that doesnt obstruct the laptop fan intakes at all (kind holds laptop up from middle bottom). This gives laptop fans a larger volume of air below it to draw from. Never found a cooler (even a high powered one w 120mm fans i built) that makes much difference to laptop temps. BUT, helping laptops own fans to work better, helps a great deal! Edit, not accounting for IETS and other next gen coolers that create a seal. Edit. Cooler helpfulness really varies by laptop model. A stand more likely compatible. More on reddit.com

So I want to buy this laptop stand but it doesn't come with a fan. Currently, my laptop needs a cooling pad so it doesn't overheat when running games. If I put a fan in this configuration will it have the same cooling effect like a conventional cooling pad?

A fan there would not change anything. Active cooling pads that you typically see do not really do anything at all. The idea is to get 'cooler' air into the laptop right? Not 'more air'. The fans can only spin so fast, and if you push more air into them, you end up with almost a vacuum wall and will possibly have worse temps. The IETS version, or whatever the $70 jet engine thing is, creates a 'vapor chamber' under the fans so they can intake 'cooler air' and that is about the best you will get from a cooling pad type aspect. Also note, that thing gets loud. If you 'need' a cooling pad to preventing 'overheating' (thermal throttling), then you have an issue that needs to be dealt with inside the machine. Settings, dirt and dust, power profiles etc.

I know this is an old thread but this might help others. As long as your laptop is has a bottom intake and side/rear exhaust then yes fans directly under will help tremendously. This is what I did. I used a metal height adjustable laptop stand that has a mesh platform then I mounted 2 x 120mm quiet Noctua fans under the mesh directly under the intake. You can get an amplified cable USB split to 2 x 4 pin fan connector and plug it right to the laptop so it will run at max speed, all from Amazon. For me it dropped CPU/GPU and the motherboard temps by nearly 20c at full load.

I’ve seen a bunch of cooling pads on Amazon but not sure if they actually work or just make noise.
I use an RTX 4060 laptop (Lenovo Legion) and during gaming it gets really warm — especially on the left palm rest and under the GPU side.
Does anyone here use a cooling pad that made a noticeable difference? Not expecting miracles, just better temps or comfort would be good.
Open to suggestions if you’ve tested any under $50. Bonus if it’s quiet and has USB passthrough.

I would like to know if there are any that last more than 1 year. Ive bought a few different ones and all worked fine on cooling but in about 1 year they die. I hate spending money on tech that last such a short time -_- Even if its 'only' $25 or $30, i still dont like it. Mine is a IETS GT500 Powerful Turbo-Fan (5000 RPM) Laptop Cooling Pad which cost 70.00, still lasts 1 freaking year.

I bought a new laptop, and I was thinking in get a cooling pad.
After a research I'm divided, 'cause I found different information about it.
The vantages:
- lower the temps around 7 to 10 degrees
The disvantages:
- blowing again the air to inside of the laptop
- it can blow dust that is coming out of the laptop again to inside of the laptop
- the cooling can damage the fans of the laptop

Bought a cooling pad, didn't do shit for my Lenovo. Bought a set of 7 dollar risers that magnetically click together for storage and they actually lowered the temps by a few degrees by lifting the intake up off the surface. It's a 5i pro with a 12700h and 3070to so it gets warm.
