Some context: I am 21F. I have always been a crafty person and I have some basic sewing experience but I’ve never reupholstered anything in my life. I have a couch in my apartment that my mom bought off of FaceBook Marketplace for $50 about two years ago. It didn’t LOOK great when we bought it, but it mostly in good shape physically, and I was covering it in pillows and blankets anyway. I absolutely love it; it’s so comfy and sturdy. However, the fabric is really degrading. It’s looking worse and worse, and since I only ever sit on one side of the couch, that cushion is severely flattened. I want to try and reupholster it by myself, but I’m worried I’ll ruin it. It only cost $50, and I can’t help but wonder if the cost materials will be more expensive than just buying a new couch second-hand. I really love it though so I’m not sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi. I am a reupholsterer by trade. The short answer is; it's not an altogether terrible idea to take it apart and do it yourself, IF - you are super careful and pay attention and label everything carefully as you take it off, and then watch DIY videos or use a DIY book to put it back together. The downside is that it will, in all likelihood, cost you more in time, fabric, foam and materials to do it yourself versus searching carefully and diligently in secondhand stores or online marketplaces to find a new one. However, if you do decide to go for it and reupholster it yourself, please feel free to DM me any questions you may have during the process. I would cheerfully help you through any rough spots you might encounter.

If you do decide to reupholster it, take a lot of photos as you remove the old fabric. Try to keep it intact, label it’s location (e.g. left arm) and use that as your pattern for the new fabric. My very first go at a serious project was reupholstering a chair that was totally wrecked by cats. I looked at a lot of how-to videos from Sailrite and found them super helpful.

Hi all,
I have a set of couches that came with the house I bought when I bought it. They're comfortable, but the arms are upholstered in this fake leather material that is flaking off and leaving gross black flakes of glue and material everywhere. I'd really prefer to not buy a new set of couches (dear god couches are expensive) but it's really hard to find actual information about how much reupholstering costs, since a lot of places just say to ask for an estimate, with no guidelines for how much it costs. I'd hate to throw couches away just because one piece of them is failing when the rest works fine!

I think it's only worth it if it is a quality piece. An alternative is a slip cover. You can have one custom made for less of an investment and it will look quite nice - better than the ones you see on line. I would only reupholster a well-constructed vintage piece (unless I attempted to do it myself ... I might since I'd have nothing to lose but a bit of fabric and time).

Reupholstering high end furniture is less expensive than buying new high end furniture. Any furniture that has sentimental value is worth reupholstering if that is what you want to do. Antiques are worth reupholstering if that is what you want to do. Most furniture, other than high end furniture, is made to last 3 to 5 years. Therefore, most furniture is not worth reupholstering. The black stuff flaking off is bonded leather. They take scraps of leather that would otherwise go to the land fill, grind the leather into a powder, add glue and coloring dyes, and make rolls of bonded leather. It comes in rolls just like fabric. It is a great idea but it will always start to peal. Always. I will not work with bonded leather for this reason. Bonded leather is cheaper than leather hides. It is used on cheap furniture. In my opinion any furniture with bonded leather is not worth reupholstering, unless it has sentimental value for the owner. You can find a similar type of furniture much cheaper than reupholstering. One idea is to make full arm covers and pin them on with twist pins so they do not fall off and they keep the black flakes from falling on the floor around the sofa. Either fabric or vinyl arm covers could work well.

FYI it costs as much to reupholster as it does to replace. The only reason you do it is if you really really like the furniture, if it has sentimental value, or if the frame is extremely well-made and is worth keeping. edit: or if your furniture is uniquely dimensioned and difficult to replace, or if you want to use a specific fabric. Can’t believe my brain skipped over those two, holy shit. I have reupholstered before and, holy shit, it is HARD and takes a long time to do - and to get good at it. Fabric Joint in Decatur does it on the premises. You can go inside to check out fabric; head to the right and you’ll see the section of the store that’s their upholstery workshop. They’ve always got newly reupholstered pieces stacked in the area dividing store from workshop; you can check out the quality of the work they do for yourself.
