Chances of Getting a Cybersecurity Internship based on what I have under my belt
You should be fine. I got a cybersecurity internship as a freshmen with a couple decent sized coding projects, Sec+, and club involvement, with no previous work experience as a cold applicant. It seems like you have done much more than me. I didn’t apply seriously so I don’t have a good sample size which means it could be luck, but I applied to to about 30-40ish places (Cyber and IT support) and had 3 call backs while applying pretty late in the cycle (around march-April). Internships from my experience are much more plentiful and easier to get than entry level jobs mainly because you are only competing against other college students and companies love the cheap labor to do projects that would be a waste to assign a full time employee to do. Additionally, many students don’t even graduate with nearly as much qualifications as it’s seems you have. Make sure you tailor your resume and get it reviewed, but programming projects and experience puts you ahead of most other applicants. More on reddit.com

I'm looking for an internship in cybersecurity but I don't have connections!
Start by networking with your professors and peers, they can help you find open internships. Those connections can last your entire career. Most internships are not posted on public job boards. Companies will recruit your school's career fairs or have standing internship agreements with the school. More on reddit.com

Stuck with no experience
Okay, this goes out to anyone looking for a job/internship and cannot get a call back. You can't control this, but you CAN help to create the conditions necessary for callback. Here are some ideas Get a professional to review your resume Find and attend any local professional organizations and network Create a portfolio of your work. An online resume and project archive is a great way to stand out. It doesn't have to be extravegant, just a blog and maybe some pictures. Attend any career fair you can find. Don't just ask for a job, ask recruiters what they're looking for in a candidate. Hack your resume. There is an entire art to beating automated resume sorters. Get familiar with it. Projects, projects, projects. These show drive, self-motivation, and are the second best thing to hands on experience. Not class projects, your own projects. Volunteer work Training. Not just certifications. Take a Udemy course. Highlight it on your resume as an achievement. Keep putting in applications Also, get a professional to review/edit your resume. This deserves another mention. More on reddit.com

Advice on Starting Cybersecurity Career with No Experience
Unless that is finishing a CS degree at Stanford, MIT, CMU, etc., it’s going to be really rough trying to get into cyber right now and a year isn’t much time. I’m at a FAANG, so maybe the rest of the market is still a little better, but currently, even for our most entry level role (ie., SOC Support), we are getting more candidates than we could possibly interview. Typical bar for a phone screen is a masters degree and a few years experience in related roles. For security engineer roles, we are mostly only interviewing internal transfers and laterals from competitors. I would recommend cramming networking/Linux/Windows admin. and aiming for a general IT role or getting some good software projects done in the next year and doing as much leetcode as possible to try to get an SDE role (also rough right now, but easier to overcome no experience [make a good portfolio and be an expert whiteboard coder]), to get some experience before trying to pivot to cyber. Verifiable/accepted vulnerability disclosure, major CTF wins, and published research still go a long way (basically guarantees an interview if I see it in your resume). Active clearance also opens a lot of doors. But otherwise, no professional experience is going to make it hard to get past the initial resume screenings. More on reddit.com

r/SecurityCareerAdvice on Reddit: Chances of Getting a Cybersecurity Internship based on what I have under my belt
June 30, 2025 -

Hi! I am a 3rd year Comp Sci student who wants to get a cybersecurity internship. I am going to apply broadly (so I will apply to IT roles and more).

So I am assuming that it is easier to get a cybersecurity internship compared to a cybersecurity entry level job, since internships are restricted to students, so not everyone could get them. However, there are not many cybersecurity internships out there compared to software developing and IT.

I have been doing some work on the side, and here are my experiences and accomplishments:

  • have a ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity certification

  • Have CompTIA Security + certification

  • Have CompTIA Network + certification

  • volunteer incident response analyst (I repeat, that I am a remote VOLUNTEER in this role where I report phishing emails)

  • 1 cybersecurity project where I make a vulnerability scanner

  • 6 months part time junior software developer at a startup company

I know there are a lot of posts on this subreddit of people asking “what are my chances of getting a job with this… and so and so,” but I don’t see much about what are the chances of getting a internship with these qualifications, which is why I am asking.

I live in Canada

Any advice or comments will help!
