I have an old Dell Inspiron was going to give to my son. When I plug in (bought a new charger, second I have tried) it beeps. I read something about number of beeps. There are 5. And at one point it said something about battery being under 10%. So if I turn on to charge it will still beep? Thanks for any input. I know it’s not worth much but my son basically just needs something for email and google docs. Thank you.
Hi Johnny_432
Thank you for that information,
Dell do indicate the 5 beeps on that laptop indicate the CMOS battery needs to be replaced, and seeing as that is a 2015 model, the battery is 7 years old which is about the expected lifespan of a CMSO Battery.
Seeing as the beeping has stopped, wait for a day or two to see if the beeping starts again, and keep an eye on the time in Windows when you start up the laptop, if that is not correct, or the beeping returns, then you will need to replace that CMOS battery on the motherboard.
Thank you very much Dave! I'll keep an eye on the time.
I go to upgrade my ram to run more vms but now when i start my pc i hear 5 beeps with no display. I’ve tried taking the ram out and placing them in one at a time. Changed the coin battery. If i keep it on the fans will start running faster. Not sure what to do at this point
Beeps 5 times screen doesn't turn on
It is saying that the CMOS battery is dead. There should be a coin cell inside (could be in heat shrink with wires coming out) the laptop that holds the bios settings and it is saying that battery is dead. At least that’s what my google search brought up.
Pop your service tag into the Dell support site, and you should get manuals and service guides with the tables to decode beeps and light patterns.
