Yes, using a normal monitor 'may' fix this issue you are experiencing. Well, the updates for the bios are usually marked critical ( not always anyway ), but mainly because they could be fixing some security issue with the intel cpu. Thing is, as far as I know there are no real exploits in the wild + there's the antivirus and the fixes added to windows... so all these bios fixes effectively slow down the cpu only, from my personal point of view. Unless one of the newer bioses adds support to a quicker ram ( example ) or adds support for an USB-C port of a graphics card you ARE using or planning to buy ( it's a real case scenario )... or fixes a bug you ar experiencing ( you are not , by your own admission, having issues up to now )... just avoid . Personal opinion, anyway.

Make sure you buy a new coin cell cmos battery and install it according to your manual. It's cheap, only $2 or so. That was a good idea not to force a bios update. As long as the computer is running OK don't update the bios unless told to by a support tech at Dell..

I am Dave, I will help you with this, any update should complete within 30 minutes, try to break out of that update loop using these steps.

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

Please try each option one at a time, then see of Windows will boot.

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair

See if Windows startup can repair itself

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore

Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

If you do not have a Restore Point, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Settings and click Restart

Upon restart, press 4 to enter Safe Mode

Once in Safe Mode, backup your data if you do not already have a backup

Open Device Manager and check to make sure all your Drivers are up to date

Reboot to see if Windows will start Normally

If the above fails, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Reset this PC

Choose to keep your files and apps, just your files or to keep nothing

Then start the Reset

Adding a top-level comment here to state that the power supply issue worked for me too. My wife was on with her company tech support all morning and they were about to send her a new laptop (!) but I checked Task Manager -> Performance and the speed was at 0.20 GHz. Just unplugging the power supply fixed it and after a reboot with the cord plugged in it's still fine. I guess the update temporarily confused the BIOS about the power supply. I'd post a pic but not allowed here.

Hello,  I have two latitude 3520 with the same problem , No reaction with Button Power (10s, 30s, and 60s) without adaptor, i contact the support They purpose me to put CTRL+ECHAP and connect Ac adaptor, same problem I resolve the problem with :  - disassembly the bottom case - disconnect battery - connect battery - reboot latitude 3520 - message 'dell bios firmware failed the bios was corrupted, restore with backup bios' - system boot ok - i check Dell command update tools (no further update).  Perhaps the dell support retire this corrupted bios on the website.

Like many of you (I would venture to guess), keeping up with BIOS updates can be difficult… you never know when a new BIOS comes out…or at least I don’t…

So we have this new CPU “flaw” and Dell tells me to update BIOS… Well, most of them are patched to latest, but a few are not…

Precision T3600 - upgrading from 06 to 14. Everything looked good, right up to the point where the window telling me it was going to update the BIOS (still in Windows) popped up. I said yes, and the box went away. Now stuck with blank screen and can do nothing. Has been sitting there for over 30 minutes.

What should I do?

I've been wrestling with that same issue yesterday afternoon and this morning. The Lat 7420 became very slow to get from a shut down condition just to the initial Dell circle logo, varying between 1-2 minutes. Once the Dell logo appeared it seemed to open Windows in the normal time. Initially I thought it was related to the dock it was connected to, but it did the same thing with another dock, or just plugged into the AC adapter. I also tried setting the SSD as a priority in the UEFI list, but that made no difference. Nor did any of the other BIOS settings I tried. After searching and finding your question on the Dell Community, it prompted me to backdate the BIOS, which had been updated to the latest (1.9.6) at some point earlier. So I downloaded BIOS version 1.8.2 from the Dell Lat 7420 support site download page and after installation (for some reason that backdate didn't fully complete until after a second restart), the time it took it took for the Dell circle logo to appear from a fresh start was much quicker. I then downloaded the next BIOS version, 1.9.3, and installed that, and the improvement still held. Then to confirm whether the issue might be related specifically to the latest BIOS update, I downloaded and installed the latest version (1.9.6) and immediately the time from pushing the On button to Dell circle logo increased to more than a minute. So I backdated to 1.9.3 and it's back to normal. You might try backdating yours to see if that improves the situation. So it appears to NOT be related to any of the Windows settings or configuration, and at least in my case, is an issue with the latest Latitude 7420 BIOS (1.9.6). I have no idea whether this relates to all Lat 7420's or not, but I've got 2 more to provision in the next couple days, and I'll see if one or both are affected.
