I’m not a plumber but I’m usually handy. Today I’m stumped. I underestimated how over-engineered delta stuff is.
The faucet keeps dripping.
I started by replacing the rubber gasket and spring ( picture attached ) that didn’t fix it. I replaced the whole cartridge with an original delta and the handle now moves extra smoothly but the faucet still drips.
Help! I don’t want to tear up the wall! What else can I try before having to do that?

Long time ago, plumbers carried Seat Reamers for such circumstances, but doubtful that'd help with a more modern Delta fixture. First time I used a reamer and saved from ripping open the tile wall, it was one sweet victory.... Someone will be along with the right answer.

Check water pressure. Too high of pressure can cause this to happen.

The spout pipe shouldn't hold any water. Maybe that pipe is tipping up and pooled water drips? Does it drip all the time? If yes, leak is from worn valve seals. The delta adapter has a set screw as you found out.

October 20, 2017 - If I activate the diverter the leak stops. The valve is a Delta 4707 and the diverter is built in the valve for the spout. When the diverter is activated the water travels to within an inch or two of the spout before it is diverted and the leak stops. This lead me to believe the oring was defective in the spout or the spout was damaged but I replaced the oring and the contact surface inside the spout looks perfect.

How do you know water it leaking back into the wall. I can't quite see from your pictures, did you uses plumbers tape between the copper threads and the new brass piece (three times around, in the direction of the threads)?
I've installed some of these spouts. They never have a set screw. Once the rubber seal is well inside the spout water shouldn't get back there, unless there is a leak between the copper and brass.
The diverter isn't air tight. When water hits the diverter it gets pushed tight making a water tight seal, your breathe can't push it enough to make that seal.

I know of no tub spout that is, or is designed to be, watertight. It is the hole in the wall from which the spout supply pipe emerges that needs to be sealed. This can usually be accomplished with caulking around the pipe, but pointlessly large holes such as shown in poster's photos make that extra hard. Better tile supply vendors sell "rubber" gaskets that grip the spout pipe snugly, but that is something that must be installed prior to the finish surface.

January 16, 2021 - Turn the water back on and open the faucetand make the stainless peg stick straight out and snug the adjustment ring down once more, but don’t over do it. Reinstall the handle. That adjustment rings applies pressure to the entire assembly inside the faucet. If it’s not adjusted properly the faucet could leak out of the spout and or under the handle around the stem. Delta needs to leave things alone.

If a new gasket doesn't clear up a drip, the valve seat may need to be resurfaced or replaced. The big box stores have replacement seats and the wrench to do it, and may have the tool to resurface. If the correct replacement seat is available, that's the way to go IMO.

All such tub spouts have a sealing washer or cartridge with a sealing gasket. You need to unscrew the unit's cap and withdraw the central core.( with main water supply turned OFF ) Now take this to your plumbing store and get a repair kit. They are available fairly cheaply for almost every unit.
