The fiberglass scare is overblown by the Zinus lawsuit. A properly constructed glass filled cloth fire barrier sealed in a mattress cover poses no real risk to your health. And while I agree that you get what you pay for, the value proposition in mattresses is NOT paying for what you may not need. Look at Sleep innovations on Amazon. They're produced by FXI, one of the largest producers of bedding foams in the US. It's the same parent company that makes the Novaform line for Costco. Been around for many years... You've never heard of Sleep Innovations because they don't sell in brick and mortar stores, and they don't advertise. So by not paying for those things, you can buy a good quality mattress for less money. Yes it has a cheaper glass/cloth fire barrier. It's what you get in less expensive products, because wool is expensive. But I'm sleeping on an SI Hudson now, and I definitely got what I paid for. A good quality mattress for less. I sleep better in that $500 bed than I did the $3500 Stearns and Foster it replaced. Answer from mattress411 on reddit.com

r/Mattress on Reddit: Is buying a cheap mattress potentially bad for your health?
June 11, 2022 -

My current mattress is a certified piece of shit and hurts me every night that I sleep on it. I have been trying to decide if I want to get a futon, a shikibuton (traditional Japanese bedding), or something else entirely, and until I make that decision (which may be some time yet), I'd like to get something cheap in the interim to tide me over.

So I get onto Amazon and look at cheap memory foam mattresses, like $150-$200 or so. And I find several. But I see some horrifying reviews that talk about how fiberglass from the fire retardant layer ruined their home (resulting in thousands of dollars spent on remediation), or how the mattresses offgas some kind of harmful chemicals, or etc.

And these reviews seem to be in the minority but they definitely gave me pause. So what's like the real story on this shit? I feel like this is something that a youtube channel needs to investigate lol; like, maybe this is just guerilla marketing by competing mattress manufacturers to sow uncertainty and doubt so that you won't purchase the other guy's mattress. Or maybe these problems occurred due to collossal user error and such risk is negligible when you have more than 3 brain cells. But even in the latter case, it still bothers me that such catastrophic damage could even be possible if you just happen to take a cover off that you're not supposed to.

So what's the scoop? And perhaps the better question is, can someone recommend me a cheap mattress or mattress alternative that won't fuck up my home or health? I mean something I can just put on the damn floor and sleep comfortably for a few months.

The Pros And Cons Of Buying Cheaper Mattresses | NM
November 11, 2020 - Cheaper mattresses simply use lesser quality materials which generally won’t last as long as better quality ones. For example, cheaper pocket coils can have a smaller thickness, therefore taking more of a beating and wearing down faster than thicker coils. The same rule applies to foam, where the cheaper foam will lose its shape and get softer faster than quality foam.
