My current mattress is a certified piece of shit and hurts me every night that I sleep on it. I have been trying to decide if I want to get a futon, a shikibuton (traditional Japanese bedding), or something else entirely, and until I make that decision (which may be some time yet), I'd like to get something cheap in the interim to tide me over.
So I get onto Amazon and look at cheap memory foam mattresses, like $150-$200 or so. And I find several. But I see some horrifying reviews that talk about how fiberglass from the fire retardant layer ruined their home (resulting in thousands of dollars spent on remediation), or how the mattresses offgas some kind of harmful chemicals, or etc.
And these reviews seem to be in the minority but they definitely gave me pause. So what's like the real story on this shit? I feel like this is something that a youtube channel needs to investigate lol; like, maybe this is just guerilla marketing by competing mattress manufacturers to sow uncertainty and doubt so that you won't purchase the other guy's mattress. Or maybe these problems occurred due to collossal user error and such risk is negligible when you have more than 3 brain cells. But even in the latter case, it still bothers me that such catastrophic damage could even be possible if you just happen to take a cover off that you're not supposed to.
So what's the scoop? And perhaps the better question is, can someone recommend me a cheap mattress or mattress alternative that won't fuck up my home or health? I mean something I can just put on the damn floor and sleep comfortably for a few months.
