I purchased a used patio set that includes a large oblong table which has PVC pipe material legs and a smooth white top. The bottom side of the table is fiberglass and it's very heavy, so I think the core of the table must be wood.
It has no umbrella hole, and I want to create one. I assume I'll have to use a hole saw. Is there any reason I shouldn't drill into this table? I don't want to ruin it. My husband thinks it could splinter or crack the material on top.
Another weird thing, not sure how significant it is--there was a small chip in this white tabletop material. It was smaller than a pencil eraser and barely noticeable. When we got this home I was cleaning the top with 409 heavy duty spray cleanser. Then I wiped it off and applied some spray citrus cleanser. I let it sit for a couple of minutes while I wiped the legs. When I stood back up, what looked just like blue ink was spreading from the little hole. I wiped it quickly, but it really stained and it took me a while to get it off. All I could think of was that something in that table had a reaction with something in the 409 or the citrus cleanser. I'm a little concerned that the same could happen if we drill an umbrella hole. I've queried google every which way I could think of to see if anyone else had come across the blue inky thing, but to no avail.
Here are some pictures of the top and bottom.
