I did two rows of 4, and I placed them a bit closer to the top than the bottom (I find when the headboard sits on the bed the pillows etc cover the bottom of the headboard so the buttons are more visible placed a bit higher). The holes just need to be big enough to thread the upholstery needle through.

July 31, 2024 - Nailhead trim adds a classic, sophisticated touch to upholstered furniture. To apply, start at the bottom of one side and work your way up, tapping in nailheads with a mallet. Use a ruler to ensure your line stays straight. For easier application, you can use nailhead trim strips, which allow you to apply multiple nailheads at once. Experiment with different patterns, such as outlining the headboard or creating a design within the fabric.

April 30, 2023 - I decided to use a mattress pad instead of upholstery foam because it is a lot cheaper and works just as well! Cut the foam using scissors so that it fits on the 48โณ x 77โณ plywood. Use spray adhesive to secure the foam to the wood. Lay out the batting so itโs nice and flat on the ground.

March 18, 2024 - You could easily get some plywood, cut it to the size you want the headboard to be, pad it with foam, upholster it, then you fix it to the bars with some simple U-brackets or pipe straps.

October 28, 2024 - Batting will stretch and rip easily so only pull it gently around the edge and staple it in place.Next, layout your fabric with the pattern facing down and begin to staple it in place. This was my first time upholstering an arch so I did a practice round with basic white sheeting fabric first. This is the part where you want to pull the fabric as tight as you can so that there are no wrinkles or odd bunching.I started by stapling the top of my arch and then the bottom middle edge. Then I worked my way out to the bottom of the headboard.Once I secured the bottom I moved to the sides and I would secure a few inches on one side and then a few inches on the other.I did this about halfway up the sides and then I started working down from the top of the arch doing the same technique of securing a few inches on either side and then switching.

September 19, 2017 - So now you can see the idea - first I have the plywood for the whole headboard. Then I have several of these smaller, tapered cuts, and I'm going to attach this kind of like a frame on the backside all around, and in the middle. To connect these pieces to the plywood I'm using pocket screws again, and this jig has really come in handy for this project. Then it was just a matter of connecting all the pieces together. Now, before doing the upholstery, I picked up a button kit, and with this you can basically cover buttons with the fabric you're going to use, so it matches seamlessly.

March 18, 2014 - I built the frame out of plywood, marked and drilled the holes, transferred the location of the holes to my foam (by marking through them with a sharpie), cut little triangles out of the foam around each hole so the fabric wouldn't bunch strangely, and then put it all together using a upholstery needle and some waxed thread to secure the button to the front and then had to blindly sort of stab through the foam to find the hole in the plywood.

July 11, 2023 - Just make sure to check the front of your fabric as you are upholstering the headboard to make sure the fabric is not pulling too tightly. Before I started this project, my grandparents were getting rid of extra foam that they had on hand. It wasn't the perfect depth to make a padded headboard, but I decided to use it to save money. I doubled the foam, placing the egg carton shapes facing each other so that I didn't have any ridges in my simple headboard. Since making this DIY queen headboard, I have found some great options for cheap upholstery foam and did a blog post on it.

September 17, 2018 - Flip the headboard back over so the legs and frame are on the bottom. Line up the foam at the top corner (Image 1), and begin attaching with staples as close to the edge as possible (Image 2). Staple around the entire perimeter, trim any access and attach additional foam to cover any bare areas (Images 3 and 4). ...
