November 1, 2023 - Panels are affixed with a vertical layout, and the raised battens effectively create stylistic visual texture and shadow lines that bring an interesting design element to the exterior. Traditionally, board and batten siding was always crafted using real wood.

Replacing T1-11 siding with fake board and batten | DIY Home Improvement Forum
The tar was mopped onto the original ply (siding) on the back of the house, and they must have nailed up the sideways T1-11 while it was wet. That yellow T1-11 is basically adhered to the original ply underneath it. It will all have to be removed to the felt. I figured that since I have to remove it to the felt... I may as well re-sheath with 1/2" ext. ply over the felt/studs and then put the plain 5/8" T1-11 over that. Then I can do the fake board and batten, with battens at whatever spacing, since there will be plenty of plywood/sheathing base for a batten nail to bite into.

Siding suggestions / fake board and batten w/ old, decent 8" OC T1-11 | DIY Home Improvement Forum
With the long overhangs the horizontalness is emphasized. I think you can embrace that and lap lines would accentuate better than vertical batten lines. If you are replacing the windows anyway, different sizing can be worked into the overall scheme. Also if you keep the T111 underneath whatever you choose you'll probably have more prominent window trim creating deeper recesses at the windows.

Board And Batton: real or fake? - JLC-Online Forums
Plywood's cheaper, doesn't tend to cup, but has a better chance of delaminating (still pretty low, as long as it's properly sealed: seal, then add battens, seal again). http://www.lavrans.com "He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp posts; for support rather than illumination." -Andrew Lang ... We have decided on a "faux" Board and Batten Siding using hardiplank vertical 4' wide sheet siding and then making the 2" battens by ripping the sheet into strips. This will make the battens 18" apart.

r/Carpentry on Reddit: Cheap DIY Board and Batten is everywhere. I’m genuinely curious…
December 8, 2023 -

Im not a pro—hell, Im not even really a hobbyist! I used to build things with my dad when I was younger and we had a dual sliding compound miter saw that I learned to use when I was maybe too young to learn how to use a miter saw.

I like to go down ADHD rabbit holes. And I’ve been seeing a TON of board and batten over the last 5-7 years and I want to know the proper composition and utility for it. But all I can find is cheap DIY projects that are clearly not really board and batten—they are simply people gluing MDF to the wall and thinking it’ll look good in a year (not to mention they aren’t matching trims, and their verticals are hanging over their baseboards). This is infuriating.

So where do I find this info? Isnt their supposed to be a veneer “board” that the verticals and/or horizontals are supposed to “batten”…? I’m so sick of people thinking they are an artist when they are finger painting a coloring book.

I’m not even saying I’d take up doing it, I just want to know.

Plywood board and batten - how to - opinions - Fine Homebuilding
March 7, 2013 - Actually, it is - just 4' wide boards. ... You're going to want to lay a batten on the ply seams, so layout your wall frame so the battens look good but fall on a stud. Nail length not a problem then, with 16" centered battens.

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Siding suggestions / fake board and batten w/ old, decent 8" OC T1-11
November 9, 2018 -

We are in the throes of deciding what kind of siding to put on our '74 Ranch (w/ big boxy second story apartment above a carport). Kinda a big long box of a house. Done in T1-11 with very little else (a tiny bit of shingles in the gables). Its real boring. Looks like an apartment building had a baby with a mobile home. See pics.

All budget-reasonable priced options are being considered. Since its so long, we're leaning towards a mixture of Hardie-type products. Maybe some alternating-sized laps, then a belly band, then the 'stucco panel above. We dunno yet. Its gotta be affordable. We want to do the area around the front door in stain-grade wood. (open your wallet and shake)

Another option that could potentially save a lot of time/money/material: The house is currently covered in old (but relatively well cared for) T1-11, with 8" on-center grooves. We were thinking about doing at least part of the house cheap-style...i.e. tacking up a 1x3 (or similar) vertical trim board, "board and batten"-style. I'm a bit worried its going to look goofy with such narrow spacing between the groove.

We are planning to put whatever-else-type-of-siding on top of the remaining T1-11 -- several contractors have said its fine and better to leave it. There is no vapor barrier currently. (There is some kind of fibrous board underneath -- not sure what they were doing in 1974)

TLDR; Can 'vertical trim board' be added to cover the grooves in T1-11 to make my house look less cheap/tacky/apartment-building-ish? (OR other ideas! I'm not a designer!)

Just a few random thoughts... Where are you located? Is your sheet siding your only sheer layer or do you have wall sheeting and a weather resistant barrier? Your roof to wall transition needs to be done differently, step flashing, kick out, and a rot resistant trim board at minimum. Stay away from stain grade unless you want to dedicate a chunk of your time every other summer or so in prepping and re staining. Being under a porch area will help, but it will require more maintenance. A 1x2 batten 8" o.c. is too busy for my tastes. Do your homework on flashing and window installation details- Get an online subscription to Journal of Light Construction and then read some of the articles on best practices when it comes to window installation. I have seen more than a few homeowners spend a good chunk of change on high quality windows and then do a dumpy job putting them in... I am more than happy to point you in the right direction as well Seal, seal, seal... If you are putting up wood, wood derivative products, of even fiber cement- seal endcuts with a high quality exterior primer. Still wan to go with stain grade cedar? Stain or paint all six sides of your board. Make sure the wood is within temperature and moisture ranges spec'ed by the product manufacturer and stain it all. It will keep your wood more stable and your finish and thus your cladding will last longer. Get your flashing details right! This means z metal with end dams above your windows, from siding to belly band, water table or siding to decking, et cetera... Integrate your flashing in with your weather resistant barrier. Don't cheap out on paint and primer- it will cost you in the long run!

DIY Board and Batten Siding
January 30, 2023 - We used large ACX Plywood sheets instead of what was previously applied to the exterior of the structure, which was traditional 1×10 wood boards, which is of course where the name “board and batten” comes from. Here’s why we used ACX Plywood instead of traditional board: this type of plywood is made of high-grade ‘A-type’ plywood on one side and a lower-grade ‘C-type’ on the other, and the two sides are attached by using a weather-resistant glue.
