Variation: Staying true to the definitions, the false dilemma is different from the false dichotomy in that a dilemma implies two equally unattractive options whereas a dichotomy generally comprises two opposites.

A false dichotomy or false dilemma is a logical fallacy which involves presenting two opposing views, options, or outcomes in such a way they seem to be the only possibilities: if one is true, then the other must be false.
A false dichotomy or false dilemma is a logical fallacy which involves presenting two opposing views, options, or outcomes in such a way they seem to be the only possibilities: if one is true, then the other must be false. In reality, there can be many in-between or other alternative options, not just two mutually exclusive ones. Flat-Earthers like to ‘disprove’ spherical Earth using their own ignorance about various issues. Then they would regard their erroneous belief that spherical Earth has been disproven as “proof” that the Earth is flat. This is fallacious reasoning because the Earth can be in another shape instead. The fallacy of false dichotomy has the following structure: A and B cannot both be true. A is not true. Therefore, B is true. It is fallacious because if A and B cannot both be true, it does not mean if A is not true, then B must be true. It can be that there is another alternative other than A or B. Disproving spherical Earth is not sufficient to prove a flat-Earth. To prove that Earth is flat, flat-Earthers will need to present independent evidence in favor of a flat Earth, without relying on ‘disproving’ the spherical Earth model. However, by ruling out all of what they consider as “evidence” against spherical Earth, there is barely any “evidence” left in favor of a flat Earth. More on reddit.com

Is This an Example of a False Dilemma?

Depends on the consequences in the case of siding with neither.

If by choosing the side of the oppressed, you could have contributed to a decrease in injustice, however small, then not doing so is equivalent to siding with the oppressors.

The opposite of the false dilemma is the "argument to moderation" or middle ground fallacy. Just because you can imagine a middle ground between two extremes, does not make that position acceptable.

False dilemma

A big one right now is in the gun control "argument". News media are notorious for presenting public options as a binary choice: do nothing or pass federal gun control legislation.

What is the False Dichotomy Fallacy?
False Dilemma or False Dichotomy is a formal fallacy based on an ’either-or’ type of argument. Two choices are presented, when more might exist, and the claim is made that one is false and one is true - or one is acceptable and the other is not. Often, there are other alternatives which haven’t been considered, or both choices might be false or true.

July 24, 2023 - The false dilemma fallacy occurs when someone misrepresents an issue by offering only two options (when more exist) or by presenting the options as mutually exclusive (when they are not). In the example above, supporting the new law or accepting chaos are presented as the only options available, while the middle ground is being ignored (i.e., one may not want society to descend into chaos but may also be concerned about human rights). The false dilemma is an informal logical fallacy.
