TIL the word quarantine derives from the italian word quaranta, meaning forty - because in times of the Black Death ships had to wait 40 Days outside the port to prove they aren’t infested.
Just putting the etymology aside, can you fucking imagine sitting outside the port for 40 days just waiting? I can only imagine the amount of times the (healthy) sailors cursed the port operators. More on reddit.com

'Quarantine' comes from the Italian word for 'Forty Days' because during the plague the government started requiring people arriving on ships to stay on the ship for 40 days to make sure no one on board was sick. Why 40 days? Why not 30? Or 70?
