Walk along the shore and about 2-3 feet in the lake. On a side note most areas along the finger lakes that have shall beds by the shore contain fossils due to how the finger lakes were made. that being big glaciers scraping through New York and melting filled with frozen ocean life. I don't know where you are on long island, but Big Brook in NJ is only like an hour from NYC, and has tons of cool stuff to find.
