I used the cabinets.com free design tool and just handed the renderings and schematics it produced to our contractor. Very happy with how our kitchen turned out. More on reddit.com

I’m an interior designer and I frequently do kitchen designs as well. I only use sketchup, but I’m also stubborn and old, and not willing to shell out more money for programs I have to relearn. The other designers I know of, and have asked, mainly use Chief Architect for their designs and drafts. If you’re specifically looking into kitchen design then 20/20 is an industry standard as well. Of course there’s AutoCAD and Revit, they are industry standards. If you ever want to pursue design further professionally at a firm, you should know these programs. I use Sketchup because it’s incredibly flexible and pretty powerful for what it is. Getting drawings done in Layout is a bit clunky and slow, so you have to be careful how large and complex your model is, otherwise you’ll sit there forever waiting for it to load. I use an extension called Sketch Cuisine by Mario Chabot. I draw a line, click a few buttons in the extension window, put in some info and voila, I have a cabinet fully formed with counters. I can even open the cabinet. He also makes a window and door extension that has made my life much easier and modelling much faster. Trimble (formerly Google) Sketchup. It’s free and somewhat easy to learn. It’s not the quickest way to draft, but easiest to start playing with. Plus there’s tons of videos on YouTube to help you. More on reddit.com
