December 12, 2023 -
Is the 'Underground Ghost Tour' and 'The Edinburgh Dungeon' two completely separate things? Are they the same thing? Do they overlap? I ask because someone tried to tell me they take you to the Dungeon on the Underground Tour but I wasn't convinced. I thought that they were separate.
Also, the 'Ghost Bus Tour', is it any good?
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

The Edinburgh Dungeon is like a haunted house ride at a theme park. There are actors, some ride elements (a boat and a drop ride used to feature). The staff guide a group of you through different sections that all focus on various nasty bits of history. Pretty fun, especially for older kids. I used to go every year or two when I was wee. Ghost Tours could mean a variety of things, but the most popular is probably Mary King's Close. This was a series of real underground vaults that people used to live in. It's a set tour where a guide will take you underground into these vaults and tour you around. There are no actors. It's an underground history walk.

Former ghost tour guide here. The Edinburgh Dungeon is a former car park turned into something resembling a haunted house attraction. It has never been an actual dungeon. There are several underground ghost tours. Several people have mentioned Mary King's Close which is not actually a ghost tour - they sometimes run ghost tours, usually around Hallowe'en, but their standard tour is mostly socio-historical stuff with a couple of ghost stories thrown in. You get maybe 10-15 minutes of ghost-related content in an hour-long tour. The Close is a street that was gradually built over, with its existing buildings being used as foundations for the City Chambers. Then there are the various tours that go into the "Underground City", which is not so much underground as built into a bridge. Edinburgh is built on hills and in the Old Town we bridged/built over a valley so it's possible to enter a building at ground level on George IV Bridge, walk down so many flights of stairs you feel like you must be at the centre of the Earth, then emerge at ground level on the Cowgate. The "underground city" within South Bridge is also referred to as "the Vaults", because it's a series of vaulted chambers that have been used for several purposes over the years, many of them nefarious, and they have a lot of ghost stories connected to them. The tours that go into the Vaults and will give you wall to wall ghost stories are City of the Dead, Mercat, Auld Reekie, and a couple of other ones that have popped up in the years since I stopped paying attention. Mercat has the most interesting section of the Vaults and claims all its guides are trained historians (they most certainly aren't). City of the Dead, in my experience, has the best guides and their Double Dead tour (which goes into the Vaults and Greyfriars Kirkyard) is the one I usually take guests on. I haven't been on the Ghost Bus Tour in Edinburgh, only on the one in London which I thought was pretty terrible. I'm unimpressed that their Edinburgh buses have puns based on London locations on them, and I think the whole thing lacks the kind of atmosphere you get from hanging around dark, dank spaces with shadows in every corner.
