Gyft vs eGifter: Which one do you prefer for Amazon gift cards, and why?
Lol, I just noticed "Amazon" in your question, I don't know why it would matter for Amazon cards. I wrote this general review so I'm posting it. eGifter allows purchases of amounts down to the penny for most cards, this is primarily useful for restaurant bills at places I might not come back to for a long time. eGifter has never required a wait for confirmations. Gyft sometimes has and there is no way to know if it will or not making Gyft unreliable in the store. eGifter's points work just like they should. Gift gives me a paragraph long error message that boils down to "You can't use your points unless you give/verify info" about 95% of the time that I try to use them. Gyft is often able to update your balance inside the app, eGifter (almost) never can. When Gyft cannot auto-update it allows you to manually log the purchase, eGifter does not. Gyft sorts cards much better. You can swipe over to the next one making paying with multiple cards less painful. eGifter will not let you delete cards via the app so I have to do clean up duty on the website periodically. Gyft will work without internet access if you've already purchased a card, eGifter will not. If this might be an issue I take a screenshot of the eGifter card(s). Their store selections are similar but not identical. eGifter does not have Target in the app. Both apps have crashed on me, but sometimes Gyt gets into a state where it won't open until I reinstall it. I think that has happened 3 times. For perspective I've been using Gift for at least 2 years and eGifter for about 1 year. Egifter is a little bit slower to open and load cards. This wouldn't be much of a problem except that if you go to another app or browser and use the icon to return to eGifter it must completely reload and you lose whatever you were about to do, including any invoice that was showing. So if you find that you went to pay an invoice with a wallet that turns out to be empty use the back button to return to the invoice. Recently I use Gyft for Target and eGifter for everything else. Gyft's sketchy points error and possibility of confirmation waits make eGifter's inferior app worth it. If you don't know, GameStop cards can be used in GameStop stores to buy Shell cards with no fees. The cards swipe at the pump, no problem. I use foldapp for starbucks. 20% discount, refunds, super fast. More on reddit.com

Gyft is nice and all, but why so much privacy invasion?
Thanks for your comments. Here is what we do and why. Gyft is primarily is gifting application that allows users to upload, buy and send gift cards and remember them when they are shopping. I realize that Bitcoin users have a more narrow use case. Android does not currently allow us to request progressive permissions, so we have to request everything upfront to cover all possible use cases of the app. Location : We are rolling our location based services soon that will help you locate gift cards for stores close to you. Also, when someone sends you a gift, we can narrow down the options that they can send to you to stores that are nearby. Camera : Gyft allows you to upload (take photos) of physical gift cards that you may own. We are working on a barcode scanner too for this. Retrieve Running Apps: We integrate directly with 3rd party apps such as Samsung Wallet, so that you can push your gift cards into their wallet if you would like. Contacts - well for sending gift cards to friends, we kinda need this. Microphone : Did you know that you can send video messages attached to a gift card to a friend?! We kinda need the camera and microphone here too! I appreciate all the concerns, and we in no way want to take your information and abuse it (we have strict privacy policy), but we also want to offer the best and most innovative services to all our users (although bitcoin users have a different profile). Remember, you can do all that you need to do with Gyft from a mobile browser (app.gyft.com) without needing to install an app. However, in light of the concerns, here is what we are considering doing next year. We going to investigate bringing out a "Gyft lite" version. This version will have very stripped down features (basically, just buying and redemption). We have raised the issue of progressive permissions (i.e. only asking for permissions if you want to use that feature) with the Android team - and if that could happen sooner, then we wouldn't need the companion app. Again, thanks for the feedback and I hope this answer satisfies your questions. My experience with Gyft
EDIT: Coffee definitely didn't kick in yet this morning when I made this comment, I mixed up Gyft with eGifter in my morning stupor. While I have used Gyft in the past and have had a smooth experience with them, my comment on the CEO of sending me a personalized message with a 9x points code because I bought several thousand dollars of certificates with them was actually eGifter, which I can 100% recommend! 3 weeks ago - I was given a Gyft card by someone else as a gift. When I try to redeem it online, they system automatically logs me off. This is on both my PC and my iPhone so it's not an issue with my device. When I reach out to customer service, they reply asking for screenshots, asking questions not directly relevant to my situation, and sending me a password reset.

r/Bitcoin on Reddit: Gyft is nice and all, but why so much privacy invasion?
December 2, 2013 -

I was hoping to use Gyft to purchase some gift cards with Bitcoin and load all of the cards I have into one place... But has anyone looked at the list of permissions required on Android for Gyft? You would think you needed network access and possibly camera for scanning barcodes. But instead:

Storage and access to all of my files: What could you possibly need to store outside private application storage?

Microphone: For recording...... what... exactly. There's no Square reader or anything like that that I've seen.

My precise location: So when I'm using a Gyft card in a store you can see exactly what store I'm in? That's kind of sketchy.

Camera: Maybe for barcodes, sure.

Retrieve running apps: What the heck for?

My accounts: Why should Gyft be accessing my other accounts on my phone?

Contacts: Yeah, "metadata".

Network communication: OK, this one makes sense!

Gyft is billed as a "no frills card manager". This all seems very frilly to me.

Yeah - I noticed that. And I agree with you - kinda sketchy. My solution: I use Gyft on an old HTC phone without phone service or 3/4G. All it has is Wi-Fi. I cleared it, put in a fake name & etc., and put Gyft on it. Only Gyft. Oh... and a throwaway hotmail addy. I load it up at home on my network, usually (although I can load it at stores that have Wi-Fi) - take it to the store and it works great. It's a great way to re-purpose old tech, and there's nothing on the phone but Gyft - so whatever permissions they want don't matter.
