Hand [pronunciation] | WordReference Forums
October 6, 2021 - In many respectable and well known dictionaries - a word "hand" transcription is: /hænd/. Although I'm a little hearing impaired in many words inside I can hear /a/ instead of /æ/... or maybe my ears are cheating me ... The 'standard' southern England pronunciation of the /æ/ vowel has moved down a bit in recent decades, so that /a/ is now a more accurate symbol for most younger people's speech.

r/linguistics on Reddit: what’s the vowel in “hand”
August 8, 2021 -
is it really realized as /æ/, even in the U.S.? even growing up way before i learned linguistics, i thought stuff like the vowel in “hand” and the middle vowel in “banana” were way different from the other /a/ sounds we learned. when i hear british speakers say “hand”, that does definitely sound like /æ/, but one of my profs told us it would be transcribed like that most of the time, not just with british speakers. to me it sounds more like “hey-und” (i don’t have IPA on my phone lol) if i slow down my pronunciation of it, like some really subtle diphthong.

Many dialects of North American English have this thing called "æ raising" or "short-a raising" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki//%C3%A6/_raising [æ] can become [ɛə], [eə], [ɪə], etc when coming before certain consonants. In this case, a nasal consonant like /n/ or /m/. What it becomes exactly depends on the dialect, but I'm general, the nasal vowel does two things in this order: Diphthongises the vowel in question. Usually adding an /ə/. Raises the vowel up. You can compare "Hand" to a word like "Had". Phonemically (that is, in terms of distinctions from other sounds), the only difference is /n/. [Hænd] vs [hæd]. But phonetically (how the sounds are actually pronounced), it becomes something like [hɛənd] vs [hæːd].
