I know this is an old post, so I’m posting for others searching this subject. In this example, 12x24 tile is trendy. Look back in historical photos - do you ever see such a large tile in a home? Very likely not. Hexagon tile is more classic, depending on the color and material. As someone pointed out, Saltillo is timeless. But, it’s really only timeless in a home whose architecture style has historically used it. You can make any shape trendy, depending on size, material, and color. If you have a Spanish or Mediterranean home style, Saltillo hexagon is a perfect choice, no matter the year. Saltillo in 12x24 would look out of place in everything except perhaps a modern Spanish home(?). Make your tile choices simple. Use neutrals that work with your other hard finishes. Don’t opt for an extravagant or busy pattern. Add color and interest in your less permanent choices, like rugs, art, and soft furnishings. I tiled my bathroom floor with large hex tiles. Absolutely the worst decision imo, I will absolutely not allow my wife to choose hex again. They look lovely. They’re easy to tile, honestly don’t take any longer imo. They’re a bitch to clean. When you mop or clean a hex tile floor you need to go along every grout line, they just accumulate dirt. Once every three months I get on my hands and knees and use a toothbrush and gif to properly clean the grout lines. Look great. Fucking pain in my arse to keep looking great imo. More on reddit.com

Small tiles = more grout = more cleaning, more places for mould to grow. Showers = damp places where mould loves to grow. Who will be doing all the cleaning of the abovementioned shower?
